Intel gears up for Atom app store

Intel releases Software Development Kit for creating apps to be distributed through an ‘Atom app store’ for Windows and Moblin devices.

Want to win a netbook this weekend? Head over to appdeveloper.intel.com, sign up for Atom Developer Program (it’s currently free) and grab the just-released Software Development Kit for Intel’s mighty-mite Atom processor.

Then whip up an app, submit it for Intel’s smiley stamp of approval – and if it’s among the first 100 apps to get the thumbs-up, you’ll score what Intel describes as “a tricked-out netbook”.

Okay, so it’s not quite as rich as Google’s US$100 million contest to spur the first wave of Android apps, which offered cash prizes ranging from US$25,000 to US$300,000.

But you gotta start somewhere – and for Intel this is the start of its drive to offer an app store specifically for Atom devices, ranging from Moblin-powered Internet pads and smartphones to netbooks running Windows 7. Developers can download the SDK for both platforms.

Intel announced the Atom app store concept at it’s annual San Francisco chipfest in September and named Acer, Asus and Dell as hardware partners supporting the initiative.

These netbook manufacturers, among others, are expected to use branded “application storefronts” rather than running their own app store.

Free and paid apps will be listed and Intel will follow Apple’s lead by taking a 30% cut from the price of commercial software.
