Intel's Larrabee mostly dead but still in development for now

Why is my GPU not working? You have been mostly dead all day.

Intel spent lots of time on presentations for its Larrabee combination of CPU and GPU and talked the tech up making it seem like the future of computing. The Larrabee platform was originally expected to launch months ago and was pushed to a 2010 launch date. The pushing of a launch date on a new platform often doesn’t bode well for the project.

Above: Larrabee isn't dead, only mostly dead. There is a difference.

In 2009, sources close to the project stated the reason for pushing the launch date was that development of the GPU and software was not meeting expectations. A new rumor has surfaced today that cast shadows on the Larrabee project again. A source cited by Hardmac claims to be an engineer on the Larrabee project.

This anonymous source claims that Intel is still working on Larrabee, but has yet to decide if the Larrabee will survive or not. Larrabee is only mostly dead it seems, but few will be surprised to hear Intel officially canceling the project. Where's Miracle Max when you need him?

Miracle Max: It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.
Inigo Montoya: What's that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change.

Inigo Mantoya: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die..."

And:

Miracle Max: "True Love IS the greatest thing in the World. Except for a nice MLT; mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, when the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is nice and perky, I love that."

Ah Tin, one of the World's Great movies!

Larrabee is a very ambitious project, and certainly not the only massively scalable distributed core architecture out there (see XMOS). For that reason alone, if you don't release when initially planned it's a good time to take some time to rethink it.
