iPhone 4 to hit Australia in July

Australia will be in the second wave of countries to get the fourth-gen "Retina, Facetime, Aluminosilicate" iPhone, in July.

The next version of the iPhone will hit Australia in July as part of the second wave of countries to receive the handset, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs revealed this morning after demonstrating the new device.

The phone will be available in the US, France, Germany, the UK and Japan from June 24, but Australia will have to wait a little longer, until July.

Jobs did not reveal Australian pricing for the device, but it will retail in the United States for US$199 for the 16GB model and US$299 for the 32GB model -- though pricing by Australian telcos is always different than the US, with prices starting from $0 upfront depending on the plan taken. The iPhone 4 will be available in black and white colours.

Apple will stop selling the legacy 3G version of the iPhone — WhistleOut has reported that Optus has already stopped selling that model – and the previous 3GS model will slip to an initial price of US$99 on a contract.

Jobs this morning announced a raft of changes to the iPhone compared with previous models, starting with the re-designed exterior, which features a glass front and back (which he says is "aluminosilcate glass, chemically strengthened to be 30 times harder than plastic, more scratch resistant and more durable than ever" -- though harder than plastic doesn't necessarily mean more crack resistant, of course.) It also has a rejuvenated 9.3mm thick, flat design.

The iPhone 4 can film HD video in 720p resolution, and features a new, high-resolution display with a higher pixel count for greater viewing fidelity. Apple has also built in a new feature dubbed ‘FaceTime’ which allows users to make video calls via Wi-Fi using the iPhone 4’s new camera on its front.

Is is not yet clear which carriers in Australia will stock the iPhone 4, but Vodafone Australia stated on its Twitter account this morning that it would shortly publish a pre-registration page on its website. Given all carriers currently sell the iPhone 3G/3GS, it seems likely this will continue in Australia.

Apple's whole announcement of the iPhone features is below (warning; undiluted reality distortion field at play; take with a healthy dose of scepticism and see doctor if pain persists.)

which converts to AU$244.39 at today’s exchange rates, and US$299 for the 32GB model – or AU$367.10

So Lets see...new features!
Multitasking! - Android did it years ago. So did symbian even further back
5MP camera! - Android did this over 6 months ago
front facing camera! - Android did this with the EVO 4G. Nokia did it several years ago
High res screen - Android, while not beating the iphone 4 screen, had 480x800 6 months ago
Wireless n - Android supports it, but its not enabled yet on hardware like the nexus one. Mainly because no one needs it (wireless g is much faster than home internet connections anyway)
720p video recording - Evo 4G does this
1Ghz CPU - Some android phones had this 6 months ago
Gyroscope!
Book store and PDF reader - Android has those already
Camera flash - Android phones have this already
imovie app

So we can see that the real revolution in the iphone is the imovie app and the gyroscope...great! I'll be sticking with my nexus one thanks! And then i'll upgrade to the dual core snapdragon powered phone when they come out (the next big thing in android hardware). I expect android phones will leave the iPhone in the dust over the next year. Apple just can't keep up with the rate of new android software + hardware launches.

Oh and i forgot to mention, I used the Rayleigh criterion to determine that their "Retina Display" technology is a load of hype. You can distinguish the pixels in the new iphone provided it is within 60cm of your eye. That is almost a full arm length away from your eye. I don't know about you, but i use my phone a lot closer than that (20-30cm?)

Presumably still has the non-replaceable battery, Apple's App Store limitations and iTunes lock-in (without resorting to jailbreaking and tear-downs, that is...)

This will be a great addition to the Iphone line. And when I get mine I'm adding: the coolest app I've seen for my iPhone. I'm using it to figure out where to watch the games on TV. It works anywhere in the world. And, I can find fans from every country. I can post my own location and events too!!!!!

With a 5 megapixel camera and 720p HD recording the iPhone 4 would be fantastic for filming videos and taking photos. You should enter any mobile videos or photography you have into Australia’s First Mobile Screenfest 2010! It’s a film festival where all entries are shot on a mobile phone. You could win over $10,000 worth of prizes so check it out at http://www.mobilescreenfest.com.au
