Kingston drops whopper 256GB USB memory key

It's like the atom bomb of memory keys, with a price tag to match.

In most computer enthusiast circles Kingston is more known for producing some rather nice high-speed RAM like the HyperX PC3-14400 DDR3 kit we talked about before. The company also makes a myriad of other storage products like SSDs and flash drives as well.

Kingston has announced its latest flash drive that will be coming to the Australian market. The drive is the DataTraveler 300 and packs a massive 256GB of flash storage into the space of your typical flash drive. Kingston says that the drive also offers password protected access and fast data transfer speeds.

The DataTraveler 300 has data transfer rates of up to 20MB/sec read speeds and 10MB/sec write speeds. The included Password Traveler is compatible with Windows computers only and the drive doesn't require administrator rights to access the Privacy Zone. Overall dimensions of the product are 70.68mm x 16.9 mm x 21.99 mm. Windows ReadyBoost is also supported on Vista computers. The DataTraveler 300 256GB flash drive will retail for $1,299. So you probably won't be picking one up on your lunchbreak... but they'll come down in price eventually...!

I remember when flash drives came out with 64meg, 128 and 256, they were $1 a meg, now they are up to this size, it's amazing, I would hate to lose one of these though full of data.

80% of it would probably be empty space or crap you downloaded from the net anyway, so I doubt it would really matter. Besides... USB disks should be treated as if they were floppies: Never keep the only copy of something on it.
