Lenovo and Qualcomm team up for Snapdragon powered device with performance of a smartphone and screen of a netbook.

Qualcomm and Lenovo are teaming up on a new category of machine called the smartbook. The machines are a step down from the netbooks flooding the market right now. The first smartbook has been talked about a bit in America and will be an effort with Lenovo and Qualcomm.

The machine will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip that is found in several smartphones on the market now. The idea behind the smartbook is that the machines will offer the performance of a smartphone with a larger screen and keyboard for those looking to do basic tasks.

Both Lenovo and Qualcomm are mum on the specifications for the first smartbook, but the Snapdragon chip in smartphones runs at 1GHz. I would imagine that there is more room for faster clock speeds in the smartbook since the device will have a larger battery than the smartphone can offer. The smartbook is destined first for the AT&T network in America and if it is well received, it will likely be seen in other countries as well.

From the way people in the US regard AT&T, anything locked to that network is unlikely to be "well received".
