No-one has yet seen a 3G iPhone in Australia but the price cutting has already started, with online retailer LineLink Data Communications firing the first shots.

APCmag.com's Danny Gorog  earlier broke this story suggesting that Harvey Norman (under their Domayne brand) would be selling iPhones for $699.99 and $999.99 for the 8GB and 16GB versions respectively.

But it seems the price cutting war has already started. Online retailer LineLink Data Communications has posted pre-order details for what look to be unlocked 3G iPhones

They've announced pricing of $775 for the 8GB version and $875 for the 16GB unit. Obviously, the iPhone 3G is not available and there's no promise of an actual delivery or supply date being made.

LineLink is accepting payment either by credit card or through the PayPal service operated by eBay. We checked out LineLink's bona fides on the ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission) and didn't find any negative notices. LineLink's "About" page says they've been trading since 1994.

While Optus and Vodafone, the two telcos to have confirmed that they'll be selling the iPhon,  are playing their pricing cards close to their chests, it seems that other potential resellers will be forcing their hand.

Not sure if I like this little bit of text at the very end of the product info screen:

"All iPhone 3G will be unlocked by us if possible at time of shipment"

'if possible' - so if its not possible we'll receive a nice 3G iPhone to look at.

I think everyone should wait it all out til July 13th to see whats really going to happen. Talk about a Pandora's box.

I agree. It would be silly to pre-order this far away with no actual official details from Apple.
This isn't like when Nintendo, Sony or MS release a new console and we all know roughly what the RRP is and the release date.

Edit: It's all getting a little bleeding ridiculous if you ask me. Really, when it comes down to it, even if you have an iPhone already and would like the extra speed, will an extra 2 days or even 2 weeks make that big a difference in your (i)life?

this whole $199 thing got me jumping for nothing......

Nah, the upfront prices would be massively inflated to discourage people from NOT taking a contract. It doesn't indicate that that's the price the carriers pay for the phones. I fully expect the phone to cost <$AUD250 on a 24 month contract, with carriers paying a $200 - $300 subsidy to Apple. Upfront cost of phones has rarely reflected the actual cost of the phone in the past (though stores like Ryda have done a good job of getting the upfront costs down to more realistic levels.) Retailers want people to take contracts because they get trailing commissions and stuff from people staying on the service with the telco.
