Yep, you read it right. The 17 MacBook Pro is the fastest laptop you can buy if you want to run Vista.

Yep, that's right.

PC World USA just released their 'Most Notable Notebooks of 2007' and guess which machine took the cake:

The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point, but the MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple couldn't care less whether you run Windows.

Pretty nice wrap from PC World, and it really shows that Apple does make some of the best hardware in world. While the MacBook Pro 17" has been around for a while now, it's great that its been recognised for what it is - the fastest laptop in the world.

While the MacBook Pro line-up is great now, I'm expecting a makeover in January, when Apple can finally re-focus on its Mac business after a busy year launching the iPhone and Leopard.

Desktops aside, it's getting harder and harder for PC manufacturers to differentiate themselves from each other in the laptop space. Now that Apple use Intel processors in all their machines and their industrial design is leading the industry - the question again needs to be asked, why wouldn't you buy a Mac - even to run Vista?

While Apple did win in the fastest category other notable mentions go to the Fujitsu P1610 for being the lightest, and the Alienware Area-51 m5750 for having the best gaming performance.

Oh the delicious, delicious irony.

So, about that "Macs are underpowered" myth then...

So its not just me then. I've been saying this for months, much to the chagrine of my Windows wielding colleagues.

mrsteveman1:

Macs are standard commodity hardware in every way that matters, and if you can compare 2 machines with identical hardware, and get very different results, then you are either doing it wrong, or something is literally broken. In either case your test is invalid.

If you simply neglected to compare identically equipped hardware, you're also an idiot.

If your going to make sensational claims, which this article amounts to, you need to come to a conclusion, not simply decide Macs rule all.

dragonmeister:

Totally agree.
This is hardly a scientific comparison.
Or in layman's terms, lets compare apples with apples (pardon pun) and oranges with oranges.
