Dell pours multitouch lovin' on Studio 17 notebook.

If you are a fan of the Dell Studio line of notebooks like the Studio 14z, but you want a machine with features like a big touchscreen supporting multitouch technology Dell has a new machine for you. Dell has announced that its Studio 17 notebook now gets multitouch technology to go with its massive 17.3-inch screen.

That aforementioned 17-inch screen has a resolution of 1600 x 900 and the notebook can be optioned with up to 8GB of RAM. Processor options range from the 2.1GHz Pentium dual-core T4300 to much more robust Core i7 parts. Windows 7 is the OS of choice for the machine.

Other features include up to 1TB of storage, GMA 4500MHD graphics with a discrete GPU as an option and integrated 802.11b/g/n WiFi. Connectivity options include several USB ports, eSATA, HDMI out, and DisplayPort. Dell even packs in FireWire and a VGA output as well. The downside to a massive 17-inch screen is that the Studio 17 is a porker at 3.2kg. The upside is you can get a workout while schlepping the notebook to and from the office or school. The machine starts at $989 ($US899) with a 6-cell battery and the slower CPU options. Add lots of options and the machines price will climb quickly.

Is one of those options a rag? :)

Gimmicky demos involving sqeezing and rotating photos are a bore.
Touch is great in a light touch-pad, held like book or in a palm; but I fail to see how touch is practical on a notepad (siting on a lap) or a desktop. The grease and dirt from the fingers won't make viewing a pleasant experience either.
