Melbourne goes 3D-ish in Google Maps

Google has mapped out parts of the Melbourne CBD in 3D.

The feature does not allow users to pan around the buildings, but does give a rough idea of how high each building is relative to those next to it. The buildings are somewhat transparent, meaning their addition does not block the user from seeing details around them.

A Google spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new addition to Google Maps, but the search giant’s Australian Twitter account revealed the feature this morning, saying: “Take another look at Melbourne on Google Maps: you don’t even need 3D glasses”.

A number of cities globally — especially in the US, but also Tokyo, for example — received the extra 3D feature three years ago in 2007, but none of Australia’s other major cities have the 3D buildings option turned on yet, apart from Mebourne.

You can check it out here.

I'd prefer Google Maps actually updates the mapping data - there is still a freeway extension from late 2008 that doesn't show up... and a railway line extension from late 2004...

Who uses Google Maps?

Everyone's using http://www.nearmap.com/ - the pictures are clearer and there's the ability to select from the different dates the photos were taken.

Can they make sure they don't miss roads/do half a road, make sure roads don't go through buildings and that toll roads aren't maked as free. That would be be more beneficial!

UPDATE: Oh, and stop giving people directions to take turns that don't even exist! I managed to get it to give directions to exit the Graham Farmer Freeway in Perth at Aberdeen Street - which is a few metres higher and definitely doesn't form any kind of intersection - freeway style or otherwise...

It would also be good if they could fix the route generator to not tell people to u-turn at traffic lights in WA - which is illegal...
