Fit for the death star: MSI drops GX633 notebook

Inform Lord Vader his notebook is here.

MSI has been a busy little bee this spring rushing from introduction to introduction in an effort to capitalize on its newfound name recognition thanks to the booming netbook market. Prior to MSI fielding one of the early 10-inch notebooks with its Wind U100, the firm was relatively unknown outside of its home country of Taiwan.

Today the little computer maker's fortunes have changed and many consumers now know the company and it is taking advantage of the brand recognition with another new product debut. The MSI GX633 is a very attractive computer with the minimalist design that is popular with computer markers right now. The black brushed aluminum looks of the machine is set off by Ferrari red trim that looks downright sinister. I could see Darth Vader storing the plans for his next Death Star on this beauty.

The GX633 offers the now familiar MSI turbo mode that overclocks the machine while on AC power with the press of a button for additional performance. The system also sports the ECO Engine to tweak power settings to match what the user wants to do. Both these features were also offered on the MSI GX403 I talked about recently.

MSI equips the machine with a 15.4-inch LCD that apparently can’t support HD resolutions despite the fact that the machine has a Blu-ray option and a HDMI out. AMD provides the Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core processor for the little machine, which means you can expect less performance than some similarly priced Intel rigs.

Graphics are via NVIDIA's GeForce GT 130 with 512MB of RAM. That last bit should mean that the GX633 is a potent little gaming notebook. MSI packs 4GB of RAM into the machine along with optional Bluetooth and integrated Wi-Fi. Battery options include 6 or 9-cell units and the machine weighs 2.7kg and measures 358 x 260 x 27 - 31mm. Pricing and availability are unknown at this time.
