New iPods coming? Major retailers slash iPod prices up to 80%.

UPDATED |Major computer retailer Harvey Norman is advertising heavy discounts on current-model iPod Shuffles, indicating that a new release may be imminent.

UPDATE | Thanks to many readers who have pointed out that when questioned, Next Byte responds that it is only offering a discount of 5% on iPods, as part of its "up to 80% off iPods and accessories" offer. Other readers who have pointed out that $69 is the normal price of the iPod Shuffle are basing their calculations on the US price of the Shuffle. In Australia, where this site is based, the normal retail price of the Shuffle 512MB is $99.

Major computer retailers Harvey Norman and Next Byte are heavily discounting current-model iPods, indicating that a new iPod release may be imminent.Harvey Norman took its discounting to TV audiences last night, with ad spots spruiking the iPod Shuffle 512MB for $67 rather than the regular price of $99 -- a full 30 per cent reduction in price.ipod150.pngApple retailer Next Byte sent out a newsletter to customers, offering up to 80% off its entire range of iPods, this Saturday only.

Heavy discounting is very unusual between iPod retailers: they have been able to sell iPod stock so easily that the point of competition between them has largely centred around whether they have iPods in stock or not.

The current fifth-generation iPod was launched in October last year, making it one of the longest-standing iPod versions and long overdue for a refresh.

At the time it was released, Apple's publicity department was at pains to point out that it was a music player with some video playback capabilities, but was certainly not to be referred to as "iPod Video".

It is inevitable that the next iteration of the iPod will bring a much larger screen for video playback, possibly coupled with the release of TV and movie downloads via Apple's iTunes Music Store outside the United States.

Apple Australia spokesperson Fiona Martin said she was not aware of an upcoming new version of the iPod.

"I didn't even know they [Harvey Norman and NextByte] were discounting the current models," she told APC.

Various rumour sites are reporting that Apple has a special event planned to take place in San Francisco with live streaming to London on September 12. This coincides with the timing of Apple Expo Paris.

John:

Their current listing doesn't show a single iPod or it's price. Only accessories. what gives?

What kind of a moron is the writer of this story? There are no iPods available at 80% off. Is it possible those companies paid him in Pints to write it?

PB:

You guys are total noobs.

Its more like $5 off ipods, its usually the ridiculously high priced accessories that vendors drop to a reasonable price, then advertise the "80% price cut!" crap. And the other key phrase in there is "Up to".

Derek:

67 dollars is actually only 2 dollars cheaper than full price for an iPod Shuffle 512MB. Regular price on apple's website is 69 bucks. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about!

Gman:

There is simply no way anyone will be selling iPods at 80% off. I can still sell iPod Minis for full price!

On average an Pod makes a retailer about 5% margin, so selling at even 10% off will provide a loss. What moron would sell out their iPods at a loss?

Uh - these are both Australian third-party resellers - hardly to be expected to be ahead of the product curve... sorry guys, but you will never be able to figure out what's coming from Apple by observing the goings-on at reatilers in a second-tier market (no offense, but that's what Aus is for Apple)

Wrong. Incomplete. Inaccurate.

Did you even look at the advertisment?

>>Heavy discounting is very unusual

Yes, and it isn't happening now either unless you count a iPod cover as an iPod. Enjoy the spike in page views, but after this lame ass article and the fake headline, I'll never come back to this site.

iPhonization wouldn't make retailers sell their current stock as it would have a different target.

Get it right idiot! The ipod shuffles 512mb are originally $69 not $100.

The only thing more misleading than the ads here is the article. Nice page-hit trolling.

Dan Warne:

Derek & Chris - this is an Australian website, and the Australian price for the 512MB Shuffle is $99. $A67 equates to $US51.

Thanks to the many other people who have pointed out that NextByte is offering discounts of only 5 per cent on iPods. It's regrettable that that isn't clearer in Next Byte's advertising. (I did look closely at the offer when writing the story, but Next Byte certainly didn't make it clear anywhere that the "up to 80%" only applied to accessories.)

It does negate part of the premise of this story so I've posted an update at the top of the story. (The heavy discount on the iPod Shuffle is still very unusual though.)

I wouldn't buy a crappod ever again. I sold mine for $200 after buying it for $447 a year ago. They are all hype.

I thought I would use it.. boy was I mistaken. The plastic front part of the ipod scratches too easily also. They just suck!

If you are going to be rude,it pays to be right.

I won't be rude in return, but suggest you convert $69 AUSTRALIAN dollars to US.

Oh bugger it. IDIOTS!
