New Vista build 5728 temporary available

Microsoft is making a new build of Vista with post-RC1 fixes available for a short time only. Grab it while you can!

Microsoft has temporarily made available a new test build of Vista for public download.

Build 5728 includes fixes that have been made in response to user feedback from RC1 (build 5600), according to Microsoft, though the company hasn't released any further details on what has specifically changed.

The new build can be downloaded here, though Microsoft says it is only making it 'temporarily' available (probably to satisfy the interest of enthusiasts who would otherwise download a pirated copy via BitTorrent anyway).

Microsoft includes some special notes about this build:

  • If you are upgrading from Vista beta 2, be sure to run Windows Update and install critical updates before upgrading.
  • Users of Toshiba M400, M4 and M5 must not upgrade. Instead, do a clean install.
  • This build has not been put through the same testing process that RC1 was [so although some things may be fixed, other things may have been inadvertantly broken.]

If you don't already have a Vista serial number, you can get one here (go down to "download Vista RC1" and then select your country from the drop-down list, then click "Go". The next page will include your serial number as well as links to download RC1, however, you obviously don't want to download RC1 as that's an older build than 5728.)
