Two of the world's most prominent brands - Apple and Nike - have come together to extend the capabilities of the iPod. This time it's keeping track of exercise.

nikeipodlogoIs the love of your life a Mac nut who already has every Apple gadget? Here's a chance to treat them to something new.

In July Nike USA will launch a range of runners that talk to your iPod Nano, keeping you constantly up-to-date on how far you have run, how fast and how far you have to go.

The shoes comes with a small pocket under the sole into which you place a small Nike+iPod wireless device. Plug an adapter into your Nano, strap it to your body using one of Nike's fabulous iPod-enabled clothing accessories and you are good to go.

After your run, you can plug your iPod into your Mac and track your progress on some Nike software.

The shoes will set you back US$100 ($130) and the Nike+iPod pack another US$29 ($37.60).

Steve Jobs already has a pair, but there is no news on when the products will be available in Australia.

Still, you can pass the time until they are by watching the slick promo on the Nike web site or by browsing the US Nike+ Collection.

The intro paragraph of this story makes me wonder if it is a subtle hint to your wife, Tim ;-)

I wonder if you have any idea whether or not it will work with other shoes? Or Ipods other than nanos?
