Buyers Guide to Netbooks

Added 26 May 2011
If the most intensive things you do as far as computing goes is surfing the Internet, playing Facebook games or typing word documents then netbooks are a good option.

What are netbooks?

Netbooks are small notebook computers that have either 10in or 10.1in screens. As a result they rarely weigh more than 1.3kg, and are generally quite thin as well. They use low-end processors that while not especially powerful do allow for very long battery life.

Why would you want a netbook?

You’d want a netbook if you want an exceptionally portable source of computing that is capable of simpler productivity applications and potentially also playing videos. Keep in mind that examples with Intel Atom processors are only good for tasks like Internet surfing or typing up word documents, while examples with AMD Fusion processors can actually play movies very well. You’d also want a netbook if you need seriously long battery life.

Why you would not want a netbook?

You would not want a netbook if a 10in or 10.1in screen is uncomfortably small, if portability isn’t a real concern, or you need enough computing power to run intensive programs or play modern games.

What are the specs?

Netbooks have either Intel Atom or AMD Fusion processors, 1GB of RAM, between 160GB to 250GB of hard disk drive storage, 10in or 10.1in screens and generally weigh around 1.3kg. They don't have optical drives, but that's a necessity of the very small size.

Conclusion

They’re very portable, they’re very affordable, but their performance is distinctly low-end. If that sounds appealing to you, then a netbook is right up your alley.netbook.
