Acer 5740G - potent Core i5 allrounder

The deal: Acer 5740G - potent Core i5 allrounder - $899.00

Added 06 November 2010

For $899 the Acer Travelmate 5740G allrounder notebook is a solid bargain because it's powered by an Intel Core i5-420M (2.26GHz), which is Intel's powerful mainstream processor. But if you think this is yet another model of the same basic 15.6in Core i5 machine that Acer is offering everywhere, you're wrong.  It's actually a Travelmate, which is Acer's business notebook line. While the specs are very similar tho the Aspire Core i5 machines, being a Travelmate means it was originally designed for business use.

That's not a bad thing for a consumer wanting one, because business notebooks are built with subtle differences to make them more durable in a business or educational setting, where they are handled by lots of users and beaten up more. These include things like stronger construction (for example, stronger lid hinges) and the use of less hazardous materials in the notebooks  themselves, to comply with corporate green policies.

So although Travelmate machine appears a bit more expensive than similar consumer spec Acer notebooks, there is a good reason. But business or not, with 4GBs of RAM and a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics card the Travelmate 5740G can run games like Modern Warfare 2 on low settings. This processor and graphics cards offer a wide array of functionality, confirming this as an allrounder notebook.

You’ve got plenty of storage space due to the 500GB hard drive, and won’t struggle to see what you’re doing thanks to the standard 15.6in (1366x768 resolution) screen. The Acer's dimensions are typical for the class, weighing 2.6kg and measuring 381x253x34.15mm.

This is a versatile and powerful notebook for $899, since it comes with a great processor, respectable graphics card and generally good specs, plus a business build that makes it more durable. If you’re on a budget but need an allrounder notebook then you should consider this one.
