The deal: Acer 5748ZG-444G50Mn - a notebook for $697 that can play games - $697.00
For $697 the Acer 5738ZG-444G50Mn notebook is a reasonable deal thanks to it’s its specs. The Intel Pentium T4400 processor is average for this price, as while it’s faster than an Intel Atom processor it’s noticeably slower and less battery-efficient than newer chips like the Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Core i3. However, the ATI Radeon HD 5470 graphics card is good for this price even if it’s one of ATI’s weaker offerings. You’ll be able to run games like Modern Warfare 2 at low settings, do simple video editing, and basic general computing.
Windows 7 Home Premium is also better than Windows 7 Starter found in netbooks. You get features like Media Centre, allowing playback of music and videos, along with TV recording should you get a USB digital TV tuner.
The other specs for this notebook are respectable, including a 500GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, and a 15.6in (1366x768 resolution) screen. This is definitely heavier than a netbook at 2.8kg, and it’s bigger as well with a 37mm thickness, 250mm length, and 383mm width. However, given the quality of the graphics card and low price, this is a great notebook for those that need something that leaves netbooks in the dust.
