The deal: Acer AS5745G - sub $1000 Core i5 entertainment notebook - $969.00
The Acer AS5745G-152 is an unusually good value notebook for $969. While it doesn’t have a TV tuner, the Blu-Ray reader at this price is a welcome surprise that gives this notebook some real entertainment credentials. More surprising is the other specs under the hood. It has a Intel Core i5-430M (2.26GHz) processor, one of the faster processors available for notebooks. It’ll provide more than enough grunt to make good use of the Blu-Ray reader, edit videos, and browse content heavy websites.
It also has an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics card, a mid-range offering from NVIDIA that will run games like Mafia 2 on high settings. While the 3GB of RAM is a bit below average, the 500GB hard drive and 15.6in (1366x768 resolution) screen are both respectable. It's a pity that the screen isn't Blu-Ray (1920x1080) resolution, but it'll still be enough to get good use from the Blu-Ray reader.
The weight is 2.6kg, which is a bit above average for these kinds of full sized notebooks. It is surprisingly thin though at 32.9mm. and with a width of 379mm and depth of 250mm it’s definitely still portable. Without the Blu-Ray reader I’d recommend this as a great value allrounder notebook, and with the Blu-Ray reader it’s an amazingly good deal.
