ASUS Eee PC 1001P - very cheap netbook

The deal: ASUS Eee PC 1001P - very cheap netbook - $333.00

Added 24 July 2010

The ASUS Eee PC 1001P is an entry level netbook and although it isn’t top of the line. For $333 it doesn’t have to be. While the Intel Atom N450 processor is one of the better Intel Atom processors, the 160GB hard drive is the smallest size you'll find in any notebook these days and the Windows XP operating system is really showing its age – it's an operating system that's now nine years old. On the other hand, it's still faster than Windows 7, which can be good for netbooks with low grunt. However, for the asking price it’s a very fair deal. The other specs are normal for a netbook, namely 1GB of RAM, onboard graphics, and a 10.1in (1024x600) screen. Gaming is definitely out, but general computing should pose no problems – as long as you don't expect to be able to manage big photo libraries, edit video, or open more than a few tabs in your browser at once.

It’s roughly average physically, weighing 1.27kg and measuring 262x178x36.5 mm. If you need a seriously cheap netbook that is handy for low level general computing, give the ASUS Eee PC 1001P a long hard look.

  • owise1 (New user): I have one of these and blew away XP at first boot with Linux (ubuntu flavour). Did not bother with dual boot.

Runs like a rocket with linux and the processor/memory/video card work well and allow full x-windows animations without a problem. All keyboard shortcuts, sound, WiFi all work out of the box.
  • Zoidbergmerc (User): yeah I got these for my mum and my sister, they rock, Mum runs XP home and my sister has Win 7 pro. Both run awesome.

Are you running Netbook edition Ubuntu? What Mobile broadband modems work with ubuntu?
  • owise1 (New user): Most mobile broadband modems (USB type) use the same chipset. I have a vodafone one and it worked fine with Ubuntu. Just needed to install usbmodeswitch package as these devices look like a USB connected CD drive - to allow MSWin users to install software without a CD - and that package will allow access to the modem function. In linux the drivers are all there. For prepaid you just need use use the *99# dial in number and connection type vfprepaidmbb. Ubuntu will look after that for you however.

I am using the full version not netbook and the screen size is ok for that. Some use of F11 to full screen in firefox helps as well as the ALT left click drag to move a window if required
  • Zoidbergmerc (User): I just bought what I think might have been the last 2 $333 Eee PCs.

I'm running Ubuntu Netbook edition and I had no problems at all using my Telstra Turbo 7 Series next G card on it, hell it was easier to setup in ubuntu than it was for windows!

Fantastic little machine, I love mine to bits!
