For $1,296 the 15.6in ASUS N55SF-V2G-SX005V is good value for money, as it combines a beefy set of hardware with quite remarkable sound quality and a sturdy (if bulky) overall build. While the N55SF’s speakers are already pretty good, the secret ingredient is a small external subwoofer that results in a superior audio experience compared to most other notebooks.

There’s also a Blu-ray player along with an HDMI port so that it’s easy to connect the N55SF to an external full HD screen or TV. The plastic exterior does give the N55SF a retro-chic appearance, and while not the height of style it’s still a good looking all-rounder as far as we’re concerned.

Processor
The ASUS features a 2nd Gen Intel Core i7-2630QM (2GHz), a high-end processor that is able to run intensive software and productivity applications without any difficulty. It can burst up to 2.9GHz using Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology if a particularly demanding program is running.

Graphics
It comes with a dedicated graphics card called the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M. This is one of the fastest mid-range cards available and most modern games will happily run at high settings.

RAM
8GB of RAM is enough to either run many programs at once fluidly or run very intensive image and video editing software.

Storage
A large 750GB hard disk drive provides plenty of room for a reasonably large collection of files including movies and music.

Screen
The N55SF sports a 15.6in (1,366 x 768 resolution) gloss screen. The resolution is average for the screen size.

Portability
The N55SF is less portable than average, because it weighs 2.7kg and is 35.5mm thick. Although it can be moved around, a decent notebook backpack should be considered.

Other Features
The N55SF has a Blu-ray player, which allows it to play Blu-ray movies. It also has a tiny external subwoofer that dramatically improves the already good sound quality.
