Notebook Hunter

The 15.6in ASUS N55SF-V2G-SX005V is a premium allrounder notebook that for $1,101 is a really great bargain. It’s got a really beefy set of specs (the dedicated graphics card in particular is one of the better mid-range ones available), but what really sets it apart is the sound quality. The speakers alone are pretty remarkable, but add in the tiny external subwoofer and it’s immediately clear why the N55SF normally costs so much. It does have a somewhat spongy keyboard, but it’s one minor negative drowning in a sea of positives.

We’re not sure when this special expires, but past experience with these kinds of Dick Smith sales is that it’ll most likely expire on Sunday.

Processor
The N55SF features a 2nd Gen Intel Core i7-2630QM (2GHz), a high-end processor that is able to run intensive software and productivity applications without any difficulty. It can burst up to 2.9GHz using Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology if a particularly demanding program is running.

Graphics
It comes with a dedicated graphics card called the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M. This is one of the fastest mid-range cards available and most modern games will happily run at high settings.

RAM
8GB of RAM is enough to either run many programs at once fluidly or run very intensive image and video editing software.

Storage
A large 750GB hard disk drive provides plenty of room for a reasonably large collection of files including movies and music.

Screen
The N55SF sports a 15.6in (1,366x768 resolution) gloss screen. The resolution is average for the screen size.

Portability
The N55SF is less portable than average, because it weighs 2.7kg and is 25.5mm thick. Although it can be moved around, a decent notebook backpack should be considered.

Other Features
The N55SF has a Blu-ray player, which allows it to play Blu-ray movies. It also has a tiny external subwoofer that dramatically improves the already good sound quality.
