Notebook Hunter

The 10.1in ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101 (32GB) is one of the best tablets available in Australia, and for $599 at the Good Guys it’s very competitively priced as well. It’s solidly built and the keyboard dock itself is among the best keyboards we’ve used. The touchpad on the keyboard is also really pleasant to use. Add in a wide variety of ports and it’s clear that the Transformer is anything but a gimmick.

It runs Android Honeycomb (updated to 3.2 at last check) very smoothly on the 10.1in (1,280x800 resolution) capacitive screen, and although 32GB of SSD storage isn’t gigantic it’s still enough for a fair few apps. The full-sized USB 2.0 ports and SD card reader on the keyboard dock along with the Micro SD card reader on the tablet do however mitigate the low storage.

At 680 grams it’s a bit lighter than most other Android tablets, but it still has a full feature set. There’s a camera on the front and rear, stereo speakers, an in-built microphone and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi along with Bluetooth 2.1. Normally the battery life is comfortably over 6 hours, but the keyboard’s in-built battery extends this to well over 10 hours.
