For only $763.30 at JB Hi-Fi the 13.3in ASUS U31SD-RX049V is a really affordable and versatile ultraportable. In addition to having a powerful mid-range 2nd Gen Intel Core i5 processor, it has a good low-end dedicated graphics card. It may not have a DVD burner, but it otherwise has specs equivalent to an equally-priced allrounder without the weight that makes allrounders a hassle to carry around.
What’s impressive given the U31SD weighs only 1.78kg is the full-voltage 2nd Gen Intel Core i5-2410M (2.3GHz), which can speed up to 2.9GHz using Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology. Backing it up is 4GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M dedicated graphics card. This ensures that the U31SD will have no problem with demanding programs, particularly those requiring a dedicated graphics card. Some light gaming is possible, but nothing higher than medium settings on the 13.3in (1,366x768 resolution) screen.
Otherwise there’s a 500GB hard disk drive, a sizeable amount of storage when you take the U31SD’s 28.5mm thickness into account. There’s also a HDMI port, so when not on the move you can easily connect this ultraportable to a larger external screen.
