ASUS X44LY-VX016V - allrounder with the same price tag as a basic notebook

The deal: ASUS X44LY-VX016V - allrounder with the same price tag as a basic notebook - $508.30

Added 09 December 2011

For around $500 you’d normally only get basic notebooks with 2nd Gen Intel Core i3s, but the 14in ASUS X44LY-VX016V for $508.30 has one of those processors along with a dedicated graphics card. The screen is a bit smaller than average, but that means the weight is also lower and it makes the X44LY easier to carry around. Suffice it to say this allrounder’s excellent value for money.

Processor
The X44LY has a 2nd Gen Intel Core i3-2310M (2.1GHz), a fast low-end processor which can smoothly run productivity applications and some intensive software.

Graphics
It has a dedicated graphics card called the AMD Radeon HD 6470M. This is a decent low-end card, and it’ll be sufficient to run modern games at low settings.

RAM
It has 4GB of RAM, which is enough to run several programs at once smoothly. This will be sufficient for moderately intensive image and video editing tasks as well.

Storage
It has a 500GB hard disk drive, which is about average in size. It’s big enough for plenty of documents, but movies and the like will fill it sooner rather than later.

Screen
It has a 14in (1,366x768 resolution) gloss screen which is standard for this size notebook.

Portability
The X44LY has average portability, because it weighs 2.44kg and is 36.9mm thick. It'll be straightforward to carry around.
