ASUS X53E - powerful Sandy Bridge basic notebook

The deal: ASUS X53E - powerful Sandy Bridge basic notebook - $992.00

Added 08 June 2011

For $992 at Retravision the ASUS X53E-SX167V is a uniquely powerful basic notebook for those that need lots of processor grunt but aren’t fussed about gaming. With Intel's top-end Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7 processor, this notebook will run  intensive programs without difficulty, so while strictly speaking this is a basic notebook there’s nothing basic about the processing grunt it can bring to bear.

The Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7-2630QM (2GHz) processor is paired with a reasonable 4GB of RAM. Although not for serious gaming, the onboard Intel HD 3000 graphics can still run newer games like StarCraft 2 on low settings.

Storage is taken care of by a large 640GB hard disk drive, and the screen is a rather typical 15.6in (1,366x768 resolution) model. Carrying the X53E around isn’t going to be a major problem, because it weighs 2.6kg and measures 34.9mm thick. It’s not an ultraportable, but given the screen size it’s still within normal tolerances.
