Compaq CQ56 - basic notebook alternative to a netbook

The deal: Compaq CQ56 - basic notebook alternative to a netbook - $488.00

Added 02 October 2010

For $488 the Compaq Presario CQ56-103TU basic notebook is an alternative to a netbook that’s worth carefully considering. It has an Intel Celeron T3500 (2.1GHz) processor, which is one of the slower processors you’ll find in notebooks. It’s still better than the Intel Atom processors though, which at this price is a real plus.

Onboard graphics are the only major spec that’s the same as a netbook, otherwise it’s better overall due to the 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a 15.6in (1366x768 resolution) screen. Windows 7 Home Premium is also an obvious upgrade over Windows 7 Starter, due largely to the enhanced multimedia features. Word processing, watching movies, or browsing low content intensity websites are all well within reach.

It does weight 2.5kg, about twice as much as a netbook. It’s also bigger, measuring 373.9mm wide, 246,4mm deep, and 37.9mm thick. This is about average for the 15.6in screen though. If portability is less of a concern than a proper size screen, then the Compaq Presario CQ56-103TU should be firmly in your sights.

  • I Geek and I Vote (New user): This is not a viable alternative to a netbook.

People looking at netbooks want something small and light - 13 inch screen max, usally for travel or commuting.

It is very hard to find good small notebooks with a bit of performance.

Even APC Notebook Hunter turns up a lot of silly results
