Compaq CQ56 - netbook priced basic notebook

The deal: Compaq CQ56 - netbook priced basic notebook - $399.00

Added 30 November 2010

For $399 the Compaq Presario CQ56-103TU completely ignores pricing logic, but in a good way. It has an Intel Celeron T3500 (2.1GHz) processor that is far faster than the Intel Atoms seen in identically priced netbooks. While onboard graphics and 2GB of RAM limit you to casual games, these low-end basic notebooks are mainly for word processing, surfing the internet, and similar computing tasks.

The 320GB hard drive is the first step up above netbooks, and given you’ll mostly handle word documents or similar it will be enough storage to last you for a while. At this price the 15.6in (1,366x768 resolution) screen is great, and you’ll easily be able to see what you’re doing. It weighs 2.5kg, and measures 36.8mm thick, 246mm deep, and 374mm wide.

It may be bigger and heavier than a netbook, but for $399 the Compaq Presario CQ56-103TU provides a significant boost in computing power thanks to its Intel Celeron T3500 processor. If you aren’t worried about high-end portability, this basic notebook is the way to go.
