The deal: Compaq Presario CQ42-136TU - fair price entry level notebook - $599.00
The Compaq Presario CQ42-136TU notebook for $599 is good value for money. Although the Intel Celeron T3100 is a much older processor, it’s still faster than the Intel Atom processors found in netbooks. While the onboard graphics and 2GB of RAM limit the gaming functionality, for the price you’re still getting more power than a netbook could muster for typical computer tasks like watching movies. The HDMI port and CD/DVD burner are also standouts, putting this notebook clearly above it’s smaller cousins.
Remembering the price, a 250GB hard drive and 14in (1366x768) screen are both good. Windows 7 Home Premium is also a step up from Windows 7 Starter found in netbooks, largely due to the enhanced media functionality from Media Centre. The size and weight are on the smaller side of average; specifically 2.2kg weight, 342mm width, 228mm depth, and 36.5mm thickness. This is definitely a fair price for this notebook.
