Notebook Hunter

The 10.1in eMachines EM355-N571G25IKK is a bargain for only $267 at Officeworks. It’s not the flashiest looking netbook but it does have the most powerful currently available netbook processor, the Intel Atom N570. While a netbook is meant to be a cheap, highly portable computer which is  not as powerful as a basic notebook, the eMachines will still let you run productivity applications like Office, as well as do your email and surf the web.

Its 1GB of RAM is standard for netbooks and is enough for running one or two programs at once. For serious multitasking, you will need something with a more powerful processor and RAM. The integrated graphics also are very low-end, so the EM355 won’t be able to play more than very casual games on the 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen.

Some newer notebooks have more storage, but the 250GB had disk drive in the EM355 is still sufficient for what should be a second computer. At 1.25kg this netbook is among the lighter ones currently for sale. In short, a good basic netbook at a very affordable price.
