The eMachines eME730-372g32MN for $578 is the basic notebook of choice in the current retail market, as it combines a very low price with some serious computing power.
That computing power is provided by an Intel Core i3-370M (2.4GHz), a faster processor capable of smoothly running several applications at once. While 2GB of RAM is small, at this low price it’s to be expected that there will be some compromises. The 320GB hard drive is also a bit weedy, but below $600 it’s outright rare to find anything higher.
There are no compromises with the 15.6in (1,366x768 resolution), and it provides good visual quality for running productivity applications, watching movies or for low-end casual games. It may not be ultraportable, but 2.6kg is still not sufficiently heavy to prevent it being taken with you wherever you go. The dimensions are average for a basic notebook, as the eME730 is 37mm thick, 250mm deep and 383mm wide.
