For $699 at WOW Sight and Sound the HP Pavilion G6-1016TU is an excellent value basic notebook that, thanks to the Sandy Bridge Intel Core i5, has versatility on par with a low-end allrounder. There aren’t any sacrifices made in the specs despite the low price, and with a low weight of just 2.3kg this is one of the better basic notebooks currently for sale.
A Sandy Bridge Intel Core i5-2410M (2.3GHz) processor can easily handle productivity applications and intensive programs like video encoders, and with 4GB of RAM it can multi-task well. Some light gaming, say StarCraft 2 on low settings, is possible due to the onboard Intel Graphics HD 3000 graphics.
The 15.6in (1,366x768 resolution) screen is sufficient for tasks like watching videos or running productivity applications. A 500GB hard disk drive is a very reasonable size for the price, and will be enough for all but the most video-happy users. One other neat feature is that the 1016TU weighs only 2.3kg, which is much lighter than average. Physically it’s rather typical though, measuring 36.3mm thick, 245mm deep and 374mm wide.
