HP 3132tx - Core i7 allrounder for the price of a Core i5 allrounder

The deal: HP 3132tx - Core i7 allrounder for the price of a Core i5 allrounder - $1,039.00

Added 01 January 2011

Bargains like these are few and far between, as for $1,039 the HP Pavilion dv6-3132tx is just a bit more expensive than a well priced Intel Core i5 allrounder. The 3132tx naturally has an Intel Core i7, but it also has a strong graphics card and a large 640GB hard drive. At this price it’s really the allrounder to get if you’re in the market for one.

The most surprising feature for the price is the Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz) processor, which still holds its own even with the arrival of the faster Sandy Bridge versions. It can handle very demanding productivity applications, and along with 4GB of RAM it can smoothly run several of them at once. On the less productive side of the equation there’s an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card, which while aging a bit is still able to play new games like Call of Duty: Black Ops at high settings.

Portability is respectable given the computing power the 3132tx provides, as it weighs 2.49kg and measures 36mm thick, 245mm deep and 378mm wide. Continuing with the specs, there’s a generously large 640GB hard drive that can even store a fair number of larger files like movies before getting anywhere near full. Finally, there’s a 15.6in (1,366x768 resolution) screen that passes muster for productivity applications, gaming and watching movies.
