The deal: Optus My Tab - incredibly cheap 7in resistive screen tablet - $99.00
Although it’s very low-end by tablet standards, for only $99 the 7in Optus My Tab is nonetheless so cheap that even with some limitations it’s still very good value for money. A recent upgrade of the operating system from Android 2.1 to Android 2.2 via Optus has seriously improved the usability. For those on a severe budget that still want a slice of the tablet pie, this has become a very competent low-end option.
A 7in (800x480 resolution) resistive screen provides a respectable user experience, and the Qualcomm MSM7227 (0.6GHz) processor and 0.512GB of RAM ensure that apps will run decently enough. A small screen means a low weight, and at just 400 grams the My Tab can be taken with you everywhere very easily. One downer is that there’s only 2GB of MicroSD storage, but thankfully there’s a SD reader that can massively expand the storage to a more respectable 16GB or more.
The functionality of the My Tab is good for the price, particularly as it has 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to ensure thorough connectivity. A front and rear camera along with a speaker and microphone endure that even with only a resistive screen there aren’t any major gaps as far as tablet features are concerned. A SIM card slot allows for the My Tab to be used like a large smartphone, and a mini-USB port allows for headphones or a data cable to be plugged in.
Although it comes stock with Android 2.1, here’s a link to the official Optus page that upgrades the Optus My Tab to Android 2.2.
