Notebook Hunter

For $899 the 15.6in Samsung RF511-S04AU is a high-end allrounder for a price most commonly seen on mid-range notebooks. The chiclet keyboard is a nice change from what’s typical of an allrounder, and the strong specs (including a 2nd Gen Intel Core i7) mean that it can handle demanding programs and modern games with ease.

The specific processor in the RF511 is a 2nd Gen Intel Core i7-2630QM (2GHz), a high-end processor that can speed up to 2.9GHz if a particularly intensive program needs more power. Several intensive programs can also be run at once thanks to the 4GB of RAM, which also helps out gaming. Of course the main component helping along gaming is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M dedicated graphics card, which is easily able to run most modern games at medium to high settings on the 15.6in (1,366 x 768 resolution) screen.

Another good feature of the RF511 is the large 640GB hard disk drive, which ought to be enough for small to medium media libraries. Finally, the portability of this allrounder is about typical given the screen size; it weighs 2.6kg, which is only slightly above average.
