Samsung Series 9 - gigantic price drop on a superb ultraportable with large SSD

The deal: Samsung Series 9 - gigantic price drop on a superb ultraportable with large SSD - $1,259.30

Added 11 April 2012

Although it normally retails at Myer for $1,799 (and Samsung lists the model's RRP as an astronomical $2,299), Myer is now selling the 13.3in Samsung Series 9 900X3A-B02AU for just $1,259.30. That’s an exceptionally competitive price for such a well-built ultraportable, and it has got a strong set of specs as well. A low-voltage 2nd Gen Intel Core i5 and 4GB of RAM are a good baseline, but where the Series 9 strides ahead is the 256GB solid state drive. This is double what you’d find in alternative ultraportables and Ultrabooks for around this price.

The only real fault in this 1.31kg stunner is the slightly scant port selection. It’s got Micro HDMI, headphone out, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and Micro SD. This isn’t too far behind the curve, but those needing lots of physical connectivity should still take note.

See a summary of the specs below.

Processor
The Series 9 features a 2nd Gen Intel Core i5-2457M (1.3GHz), a mid-range low-voltage processor that can run productivity applications and some intensive software.

Graphics
It comes with an integrated graphics solution called Intel HD Graphics 3000. It’s on par with a low-end dedicated graphics card and is sufficient for modern games at the lowest settings.

RAM
4GB of RAM is enough to run several programs at once smoothly. It’s more than enough to ensure fluid overall system performance with Windows 7 Home Premium.

Storage
A 256GB solid state drive is reasonably large, and will be sufficient for important documents along with some other programs and files.

Screen
The Series 9 sports a 13.3in (1,366 x 768 resolution) matte screen. The matte screen is better suited for outdoor use, because direct sunlight won’t turn it into a mirror as would be the case with a gloss screen.

Portability
The Series 9 has exceptional portability, because it weighs 1.31kg and is 16.3mm thick. It’s more than light enough to be taken anywhere without any problems whatsoever.
