Toshiba X770 - good value 3D capable Intel Core i7 gaming notebook

The deal: Toshiba X770 - good value 3D capable Intel Core i7 gaming notebook - $2,293.30

Added 28 July 2011

For $2,293.30 until Sunday at JB Hi-Fi the 17.3in Toshiba Qosmio X770/00X is a terrific bargain. This gaming notebook can run the latest and greatest like Crysis 2 on high settings in 3D, while the combination of a Blu-ray burner and full HD screen mean you can also enjoy high quality Blu-ray movies at their native resolution. It’s a versatile powerhouse by any measure.

The Intel Core i7-2630QM (2GHz) processor is a good fit for a gaming notebook, because when running a particularly demanding title it uses Turbo Boost 2.0 technology to ramp up the clock speed to a very high 2.9GHz. Together with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M dedicated graphics card and 8GB of RAM there aren’t any modern games that the X770 won’t be able to smoothly run.

Of note is the full HD 3D capable 17.3in screen, which is great for both gaming and Blu-ray movies. Storage is plentiful due to the 750GB hard disk drive and 500GB hybrid hard disk drive. The hybrid HDD has a small solid state drive integrated into it, so while not as fast as a standalone SSD it’ll still allow the X770 to boot faster and access programs more quickly. Having the space is helpful given the presence of the Blu-ray burner that can burn massive full HD movies. Portability is ordinary, because the X770 weighs 3.4kg and is 43.9mm thick.
