To the collective sighs of relief of iPhone hopefuls in Australia, Optus has announced it will sell the iPhone, proving Apple has ditched its one-carrier policy for the iPhone.

'Yes', Optus will sell the iPhone in Australia, officially making Australia the second country (after Italy) to have multiple carriers selling the iPhone.

In a carefully (and minimally) worded statement, Optus, SingTel, Bharti Airtel and Globe 'today announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia later this year. '

This announcement confirms that the iPhone will not be carrier exclusive in Australia or in other parts of the world, and a likely announcement from Telstra is also, presumably due shortly.

Combined with the news that iPhones are no longer available, a more substantial announcement, including more details on an upgraded '3G' iPhone and additional availability information is expected shortly.

This means great things for competitive pricing.

Douglas (User):

Yay! Sorry, Vodafone, but if Optus have it, I'll take them, I get more coverage, and I've no desire to go to Europe soon anyway, which is one reason to go with Vodafone.
