The release of the Palm Pre will be timed exactly to catch iPhone customers coming off contract.
In the United States, the Pre - which will make or break Palm's fortunes - will be offered exclusively by Sprint. No local carrier announcement has been made in Australia yet, though one-carrier exclusive deals are becoming more common.
Palm needs this phone
to be successful as they must reverse their last six straight quarter
losses which have cost the company over $650 million.
The device is
schedule to release prior to the end of June. This is a perfect launch
time, and quite possibly planned for a reason as the initial iPhone 1.0
contracts are slated to expire simultaneously.
Palm investor Roger McNamee is hitting the streets hard to market
and push the device, which he believes will be an iPhone killer."You
know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary
of the first shipment of the iPhone," said McNamee to Bloomberg. "Not
one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later."
"Think
about it -- If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you
wanted the coolest product on the market," stated McNamee. "Your
two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re
going to buy."
The Palm Pre features a full touch-screen casing which slides to reveal a Qwerty keyboard which will appeal both to fans of the iPhone’s touch screen as well as people who tend to utilize a standard smartphone for the keyboard.
The price is not yet available, but it's not expected to be unaffordable, as it must combat the iPhone 3G and the next revision of the iPhone in the market.

Judging by the press kit and available information the Palm Pre is an awesome device; however for many individuals the concept of beating the iPhone is impossible. Many people will be thinking: "For all I know the device could be phenomenal, but who am I to judge until I’ve gotten my hands on one?"
