New battery has more power and won't overheat.

We all remember the massive battery recalls that happened in 2007. Batteries from several computer makers were recalled after several of the batteries in computers overheated and caught on fire. Panasonic has announced a new battery that is safer and has more capacity than previous battery types.

The new battery is a lithium-ion device built on an 18650 form factor. The form factor is a standard size 18mm diameter and 65mm long battery. The individual cylinder shaped batteries are then packed into the cases that we recognize as laptop batteries. The new battery can hold 3.1Ah of power per cell. Older tech batteries can hold only 2.9Ah of power by comparison working out to a 7% higher capacity for the new cells.

That power increase doesn’t come at larger cell size either, which is important. The battery is typically one of the heaviest components of a laptop already. The new battery tech uses a positive electrode built from nickel and has an insulating metal oxide layer between the cathode and anode. This special metal oxide layer is designed to prevent the battery from overheating if a short circuit happens.

What's the chances these things aren't compatible with the first batch of cameras with copy-protected batteries?
