If, like this reviewer, your gardening efforts tend to result in black lumps of decaying organic matter, you may need to invest in something fancier than the standard ceramic pot and fertiliser.
The Parrot Flower Power is a battery-powered twig-shaped smart sensor that continually monitors your plant’s soil moisture, fertiliser, ambient temperature and light intensity to ensure it’s getting all of the nutrients it needs.
Of course, every plant is different, and this is where the Parrot Flower Power iPhone/Android app comes in handy.
Once you’ve paired the Flower Power to your phone via the app and specified the type of plant you’re monitoring (it has a database of more than 7,000 types), it will start to analyse the plant’s condition and, within 24 hours, give personalised recommendations such as “add fertiliser”, “water your plant” or “move to a sunnier spot” based on the plant’s specific needs.
The app also charts all of the data that it gathers, so you can see how the four categories have progressed over time to evaluate the plant’s long-term health.
The app needs 24 hours to generate each new batch of recommendations, but it has a ‘live mode’ that instantly shows the plant’s moisture levels, light levels and temperature.
If you’re hoping to be able to check on your plants while you’re at the office or on holidays, however, the Parrot Flower Power won’t be any use. Since it uses the short-range Bluetooth technology to send information directly to your phone (as opposed to Wi-Fi), you’ll have to be home to check on your plant’s health via the app.
After two weeks of using the Parrot Flower Power, we’re happy to report that the spathiphyllum indoor plant we purchased to spruce up the living room is wilt-free and thriving.
