Is there any possibility of you providing a solution to the problem of dual booting a new Acer laptop I have recently bought with Windows 7 pre-loaded and no W7 disc supplied? Acer only provide a system to produce your own recovery DVDs (three in total = 10GB). I tried using ImgBurn but it was prevented from accessing some W7 files (I know not of what). Would an external hard drive help here?
Please help, W7 is making my blood pressure rise alarmingly! Yet again a new Windows for which I am unable to get drivers for my printers & scanner.
Please note: I had no alternative to this laptop with W7!!!!!!!

Hello,
Thank you so much for writing this great tutorial. I got stuck! I have an ACER 3810T with Windows 64 bit installed on a 500gb hard drive. I successfully partitioned my hard drive, c:450gb, e:50gb. I then put in the XP (full version) installation disk and click on [install Windows XP]. It gives me the following error "Setup cannot continue because the version of windows on your computer is newer that the version on the CD". I would like to install the xp on the e drive like in your tutorial.
Am i doing the installation incorrectly? do i need a different version of xp?
any suggestions?
thanks so much,
amy

"Of course you can dual-boot Vista and XP," he cried, giving his thigh a hearty smack. "I've done it many a time. Just follow these simple steps!"

Okay. Shrink Vista's partition, fine. Install XP in empty space, okay. Download EasyBCD (or whatever it's called).... Ummm. XP doesn't seem to be able to use my computer's Ethernet card. Okay, just 'boot from my Vista CD'.... Oh. I've got two options: reload Vista after copying my files or reload without copying my files. Copying will take days. Goodbye 150GB of stuff, I didn't need it anyhow. Still can't find the drivers for XP...

Wow - so many MacoPhiles here to bash Vista... I am an astrophysicist and use all manner of MacOSes, Linux andWindoze - and here is some irony - all you Vista bashers are full of it. Vista runs fine if you know what you are doing - no different than any other OS... in fact I am quite disappointed with Leopard and now Snow leopard when it compares to Vista and 7... From Tiger onward, Apple is nothing but arrogant trouble at 3 times the cost. that cocky commercial about no Apple problems is a pure crock. You only get no problems with Windows - it seems you Vista bashers with PCs that dump out in 5 minutes need to buy boxes that are not 5 times as old as Moore's Law - say perhaps a 386SX or higher? Til them speak with fact - Ultimate is just fine. At least when you program at 10-20 terabytes of processing data per night...

PC Tech,
I like the fact you have enough inteligence to figure out different OS rather than the rest of these posts.
I have Vista 64-bit installed on a Gateway DX4820 and need to dual boot with XP. Some of my significant applications require a 32-bit Windows OS.

Anyway, I was finally able to get XP installed and I can dual boot. I have to change one of the BIOS Integration settings from SATA (RAID) {Vista 64-bit} to Native IDE {Win XP}. Beyond that I cannot "find" the Ethernet connection integrated on the motherboard or load any drivers from the CD I burned using Gateway's System Recovery.

Do I *really* need to change BIOS settings when toggling the OS I boot up with? Should I expect to? I had to tweak one BIOS setting to get past the BSOD when installing XP.

What can I do when booted up with XP (SP2) to connect to the internet? I guess the real question is how can I load my driver(s) and which one(s) should I load?

Thank you all!

Yes, i do agree with it that this window xp does not come some drivers, moreover major reason of getting their vista flopped is a lot of bugs and block holes. Most of people including major cheap web hsoting providers, like blue host, hostgator or some financial or IT related firms are still using window 7 or xp instead of vista. In fact last year i get a chance to have meeting with some microsoft guys, they themselve were saying that XP even dotn have buslogic or isologic drivers but still its better then vista.

In 1989, Microsoft introduced its flagship office suite, Microsoft Office. The software bundled separate office productivity applications, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. On May 22, 1990 Microsoft launched Windows 3.0.The new version of Microsoft's operating system boasted such new features as streamlined user interface graphics and improved protected mode capability for the Intel 386 processor; it sold over 100,000 copies in two weeks.Windows at the time generated more revenue for Microsoft than OS/2, and the company decided to move more resources from OS/2 to Windows. In the ensuing years, the popularity of OS/2 declined, and Windows quickly became the favored PC platform.During the transition from MS-DOS to Windows, the success of Microsoft's product Microsoft Office allowed the company to gain ground on application-software competitors, such as WordPerfect dedicated server and Lotus 1-2-3.According to The Register, Novell, an owner of WordPerfect for a time, alleged that Microsoft used its inside knowledge of the DOS and Windows kernels and of undocumented Application Programming Interface features to make Office perform better than its competitors.Eventually, Microsoft Office became the dominant business suite, with a market share far exceeding that of its competitors.

Microsoft began work on Windows Vista, known at the time by its codename Longhorn, in May 2001 five months before the release of Windows XP website hosting. It was originally expected to ship sometime late in 2003 as a minor step between Windows XP and Blackcomb, which was planned to be the company's next major operating system release. Gradually, "Longhorn" assimilated many of the important new features and technologies slated for Blackcomb, resulting in the release date being pushed back several times. Many of Microsoft's developers were also re-tasked to build updates to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 to strengthen security.Faced with ongoing delays and concerns about feature creep, Microsoft announced on August 27, 2004 that it had revised its plans. The original Blackcomb, based on the Windows XP source code, was scrapped, and Longhorn's development started anew, building on the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 codebase, and re-incorporating only the features that would be intended for an actual operating system release. Some previously announced features such as WinFS were dropped or postponed, and a new software development methodology called the Security Development Lifecycle was incorporated in an effort to address concerns with the security of the Windows codebase.

While these new features and security improvements have garnered positive reviews, Vista has also been the target of much criticism and negative press data recovery. Criticism of Windows Vista has targeted its high system requirements, its more restrictive licensing terms, the inclusion of a number of new digital rights management technologies aimed at restricting the copying of protected digital media, lack of compatibility with some pre-Vista hardware and software, and the number of authorization prompts for User Account Control. As a result of these and other issues, Windows Vista had seen initial adoption and satisfaction rates lower than Windows XP.However, with an estimated 330 million internet users as of January 2009, it has been announced that Vista usage had surpassed Microsoft’s pre-launch two-year-out expectations internet phone of achieving 200 million users. As of the end of August 2009, Windows Vista (with approximately 380 million internet users) is the second most widely used operating system on the internet with an approx. 23% market share, the most widely used being Windows XP with an approx. 69% market share.
