I think another major piece in regards to OS's is what software you can run on it...all have the basics (word processing, internet etc) so if that's all you do, any will do.

But, roughly, I think things work out something like this these days in terms of what software each OS is best at...
Windows - gaming
OSX - anything multimedia
Linux - programming

The other thing is that Linux is very geek oriented, with almost infinite customisability, OSX is almost the total opposite, and windows somewhere between the two.

Just my thoughts

According to microsoft, stop 0x0000007B could be:
-a boot sector virus
-driver issue
-hardware issue - IRQ conflict
-corrupt partition

A virus is unlikely, as vista works, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
A corrupt partition is unlikely, as you reformatted
An IRQ conflict is unlikely; IRQ table should be the same in both vista and XP and it works.
A driver issue sounds fairly likely, but I agree with apt.pupil, probably because it's the same HDD

Try repairing XP. Boot up the cd, select "Setup XP", select "Repair", as opposed to using the repair console.

If that doesn't work, try a second HDD.

If that doesn't work, try a different XP disc. It may have installed a corrupt file, but I doubt it.

Is there any sort of pattern to the freezes?

Before reverting to XP, I suggest finding out if the problems are hardware or software; otherwise reverting to XP will be a waste of time.

It would be helpful to see what the event log says.

IME your problems are most likely to be drivers, graphics card or hard drive.

If you do decide to install XP, back up all your documents, record what software you have and install XP as has always been done.
Make sure your HDD is in IDE emulation mode, and you do a full format.
You'll also need IE for updates; make sure you have IE8 or 9 (not sure if 9 supports xp) as the bundled 6 is notoriously insecure.
You might consider integrating SP3 and your drivers into a disk using nLite to save installing them later.

The best way to choose a monitor is to look at one. Specs and brands are a good place to start, but they cannot tell you everything.

Don't base your opinion off display monitors; they will have been on for a long time.

I don't think that 27" is 'better' than 24". It's different.
It will definitely be better for movies and gaming.

[strike]Don't get a 27" with a resolution of 1920x1080. Text will be near impossible to read.
Around 2560 x 1440 is good.[/strike]
Edit - brain fail. This is stupid. Ignore this.
Just wondering about the comment about 1920 x 1080 on a 27 inch being too small to read text. Wouldn't it be easier to read off a 1080p 27" than a 24".
You're right. I don't know why I wrote that. Still, the higher res gives you more space.

According to this calculator 85cm - 1m is the best distance.

The screen size shouldn't matter, but the resolution will. 2560x1440 requires a little more memory than 1920x1080. I don't know the exact calculations.
However, any card that you get to run modern games on is likely to be 2GB. (I think the GTX 580 is 1.5GB).

Most monitors run at 60 Hz. This means the highest fps that you can get is 60 fps.
You can get 120 Hz, which is used for 3D, and I believe Asus has a 27" one.

IMO, here's how fps breaks down.
>60 Hz is very nice
40-60 Hz is good
30-40 Hz is acceptable
25-30 Hz is playable
20-25 Hz is playable if very desperate
<20 Hz is unplayable

As others have said, $800 is a bit of a low budget.
If you must stick to this, do as Chris suggested: Phenom II X2 555 and HD6950.

Gaming is more dependent on your graphics card than CPU. You won't get any noticeable difference with an X6 over an X4 or an X2.
The X6 is good for for heavily multithreaded software, such as CS5.

Head over to the $1500 build thread for some ideas at that price point.

For $1000, something like this would be nice:

-some P67 motherboard
-1TB hdd
-4GB DDR3 1333
-HD 6870 or GTX 560

ss-rotel's suggestions are good. My 2c:

I'd get an Asus or Gigabyte mobo over an ASRock. I've had a few ASRock boards fail prematurely and/or had flakey performance.

Cases are largely aesthetic. There is some difference in cooling and volume. If you're building this system, case choice becomes more important: you'll need something roomy, soft edges good cable management etc. That said, the Phantom gets some decent reviews.

I wouldn't bother raid. It's not a backup solution and can get a bit fiddly to set up and recover. You can pick up Seagate 2TB drives for ~$95

The GTX 570 is a good card. You should also consider a Radeon 6970.

The TX850 is a great PSU, but 850W is way overkill. You'll get more efficiency from something closer to ~600W. Not a problem, but you might save a few $$ in power bills.

SSD's are great for boot drives and software you're using often. However, with games an SSD will only improve loading times, which is minimal. I'm waiting until 1TB SSD's reach reasonable prices.

Definitely sounds like the mobo is dead.
Unfortunately, OC'ing voids the warranty, so you won't be able to RMA it.

To confirm that the mobo is dead, you'd have to use all the other parts in another system and see what happens.

If it was working, it would beep to tell you that no memory or graphics was detected. I'm not sure if this happens if the bios is corrupted; however if the bios is corrupted, it will be difficult to repair.

Your mobo comes with something called 'Virtual DualBIOS', which is supposed to be able to repair the bios, but apparently is worthless, the backup being on the HDD.
True DualBIOS is very useful; the backup is on the mobo and will (should) automatically repair the corrupted bios. I'm yet to test this.

Yes, that mobo has a PCIe slot.

No, graphics memory is different to system memory. It doesn't matter if your graphics card has DDR3, and your system DDR2.

I would recommend 2 upgrades, not one.

1) new CPU.
2) as, suggested, discrete graphics.

Two good combinations:
1) An e5400 (~$75) and a GTS 250 (~$125), if you're gaming.
2) An e7500 (~$140) and a GT 220 (~$70), if you're not.

I suggest both a new CPU and graphics because any graphics card between $150 and $200 will result in a CPU bottleneck with an e2160.
The first combo is suggested because graphics is more important than cpu in gaming; however the second combo is a bit more balanced.

If you're wondering, this is your mobo. (Yes, that is GB's Finnish website...wasn't on their global :/)

If you have nearly $300 for a graphics card, a much better choice would be a HD 5830 eg
You could also get a HD 5770 for ~$100 less.

You'll also need to make sure that your ram is on the memory support list here.

I don't think that there's anything particularly bad about that motherboard, as long as you don't crossfire, nor use USB3.

Building i5 comp.. Needin a little help!

Both the ATI's I suggested are superior to the GTS 250.

The best way to compare graphics cards (and most hardware) is through benchmarks.
For example, in crysis, under the same settings (1680x1050, very high, no AA) the cards get the following FPS:
GTS 250 - 15.5
HD 5770 - 24.6
HD 5830 - 31.2

The higher the FPS, the better. (FPS is frames per second; 25 is playable, 30-40 is good, 60+ is excellent, <20 is unplayable)

I'm uncertain of the differences between PCI 2.0 and 1.2. I doubt that there would be any significant difference.

As rogue said, the biggest problem with that mobo is upgrade-ability. If you want more ram in the future, you would have to swap out for 4GB sticks.
Another problem that I just noticed with that mobo is the positions of the pci slots. All the suggested graphics cards are dual slot, meaning that only one pci slot will be available. This means that you won't be able to have both an internal wireless card and tv tuner; however both of these are available as usb dongles.

The GTS 250 can run Shift fine. I know someone with a GTS 250 running shift fine. However, some time in the future a much more demanding game/software might come out that you'll want that a GTS 250 won't be able to handle. That's why I recommend getting the best hardware you can afford rather than what you need right now. Saves money in the future.

From the memory support list:
Corsair CM3X8GX3M4A1333C9
G Skill F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK and F3-10666CL8D-4GBECO
Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G
OCZ OCZ3P1333LV4GK

These are all 2GB sticks DDR3-1333.

The reason I say to only get memory from the support list is that i5's and i7's are particularly picky about the memory that they take. If you spend some time googling i5/i7 memory errors you'll find thousands of problems.

Because these are very specific sticks, you might struggle to find them.
The OCZ sticks are here for $159. I suspect most of the above will be around that price.

Premiere and Lightwave aren't too demanding, so I think the best option would be comfreak's.

However, if you have $1000+ available, getting new everything would be the best.

1) Make sure the RAM you get is on the mobo's QVL. i5/i7's are picky about their memory.
2) Get the 5850. you might not use all of its power now, but it's a good match for the i5, and will give you plenty of power for the future.
3) My preference is for the HAF 932. I'm not sure how cooling, build quality and practicality compare among those cases, but I think the 932 looks the best. Others here might know of some better cases.
4) Get a better PSU. That model is a few years old, and may prove insufficient. Look for something around 650W (IMO 500W would be about the minimum for those parts), Corsair, Thermaltake, Coolermaster, Antec are good brands. Something around $150 should be a good unit.
5) Stock CPU cooling will be fine, unless you're OC'ing. I have an i5, with stock cooling, running at around 40 C.

Prices from wherever I could find them; some may be US prices.

CPU: 2x Xeon X5680 - $3326
GPU: 2x Asus HD 5970 - $1758
RAM: 18x 4GB Corsair ECC DDR3-1333 - $3861
Mobo: Supermicro X8DAH+-F - $~500
Optical: Whatever - $40
Case: SuperMicro SuperChassis 745TQ-R800 - $573.73
PSU: Included with case
HDD1: 64GB Intel X25-E - $1122
HDD2: 2x ioDrive Duo 640 GB - $19 590
HDD3: 6x Seagate 2TB - $1014

TOTAL: $31 784.70

I wanted a Xeon 7500, but couldn't find any motherboards with 2 x16 PCI-e slots, so settled for a 5600.

2 5970's, the best graphics around. I don't know if they can be crossfire'd or not.

The motherboard can take up to 192GB, but I couldn't find any 8GB sticks of ECC memory. 'Only' 72 GB should suffice.

I went for the mobo because it was the best I could find with 2 x16 PCI-e slots.

The case doesn't look very good, but the motherboard is enhanced E-ATX, and this case definately will support the motherboard.

64 GB SSD, for boot drive.
ioDrive Duo's, because they are the fastest SSD's available. 2 because only 2 will fit in the motherboard, as the 5970's are dual slot.
6 2TB mechanical drives because I can.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: parts for a new PC?

I agree with everything Michael J said.

For graphics, probably a HD5770.

I like one HDD for OS, one for everything else. That way if your OS gets screwed, you won't lose much data when reformatting.
Use the external for a backup. Save yourself lots of pain.

IMO for document-style work, 20" is nice, gaming/media 24"+. If you do both, 22". Get a nice 22", and dual screen with your current 16".

Soooo...:
CPU - Core i5-750, $229
GPU- Asus HD 5770, $205. I like Asus...there are cheaper brands.
RAM - 4GB Kingston kit, $124. Kingston or Corsair are good. Not sure what this RAM's specific name is, but if you go for an i5 build, make sure the RAM you get is on the manufacturer's QVL. i5 builds can be picky with their RAM.
Mobo - Asus P7P55D-LE, $145. A low to mid range board; you don't need the features of the pro or anything. I prefer Asus, but another big brand like Gigabyte would be fine.
HDD - Seagate 1TB, $102. Dirt cheap. You will fill it.
Optical - Asus DVD Drive, $35. I don't work for Asus, promise! Brand is practically irrelevant with optical drives.

Monitor (optional) - Not sure of a specific one ~$180
KB/Mouse (Optional) - From $20 (Microsoft bundle) to $330 (Logitech G19 + Logitech G9x)

Total (Minus optional): $840
Total (inc optional): $1040 to $1350

Two things I forgot: Case and PSU.
Case doesn't really matter; a mid-tower would be a good size. Look through the various case manufacturer's and pick one that looks nice. Add $100 to $200.

PSU is very important.
-Modular PSU's are great for cable management.
-Get a name brand; Corsair, Antec, Coolermaster, Thermaltake are some good ones.
-650 W would be enough.
-Some PSU's are noisy and/or hot.
Add ~$180

Nice introduction to multicores here. Few years outdated, but the principle is the same.
The 650 is better at the moment because it is faster. Most software today will run better a dual core than a quad, if the dual is faster.
However, more software is coming out that runs better on quad cores, eg GTA4, CS4.
I recommend the 750; it will probably useful longer than the 650 as quad core ready software is released.
The 650 also has an integrated gpu. You won't need this, unless your dedicated graphics card fails. The 650 also runs cooler, quieter and uses less power than the 750.

Some good threads here and here.

IMO 8GB of RAM is pointless right now; I doubt you'd use it all. RAM's cheap enough that you can get more later easily enough.
Make sure it is on the QVL eg.

Avoid cases that come with PSU's. Those PSU's are inadequate.
Good article here.

Go for a midrange P55 motherboard; eg Asus P7P55D's that aren't pro, deluxe or premium (those are great boards, but you won't need their extra features) or something from the Gigabyte UD3 or UD4 line.

Once you've picked specific parts, post them here.

The builds will vary depending on purpose. Prices from MSY and CentreCom.
The builds I'll propose will just be the essential components: CPU, GPU, Mobo, RAM, with enough cash left over for case, PSU etc.
At this price bracket, non-essential components will not be very good.

CPU SPECIFIC BUILD:
Phenom II-945 - $179
Asus M4A785TD-V-EVO - $114
4gb Kingston DDR3 1333 - $124
TOTAL=$417
Use on-board graphics.

GPU SPECIFIC BUILD:
Asus HD5770 - $205
Phenom II-550 - $104
Asus M4N68T - $77
4gb Kingston DDR3 1333 - $124
TOTAL=$510
Motherboard isn't very good; would consider replacing the 5770 with a GTS250, and the proposed mobo with an Asus M4A785T-M.

If the non-essential components are included in the $500:
Phenom II-550 - $104
Asus M4A785TD-V-EVO - $114
4gb Kingston DDR3 1333 - $124
TOTAL=$342

What hardware do you currently have?
Games are primarily graphics constricted; if you have a newish CPU, it may be best to replace graphics card first. 3D will require a current graphics card and a fancy monitor (not sure of details).

CPU: i5-750 - $229
GPU: Either ATI HD5850 now, or wait a month for nVidia's new line - $400
Mobo: Asus P7P55D-LE - $145
RAM: 4GB Kingston DDR3-1333 - $124. Must be on the QVL - save yourself some headaches.
PSU: 650W, must be brand name; Coolermaster, Antec, Corsair, Thermaltake, Seasonic - $160
HDD: Seagate 1TB - $105. Not necessary, but advisable is a second smaller drive dedicated to the OS.
TOTAL: $1163
Also just been given two 512mb sticks. They run slower than my 800mhz stuff but would boost me from 2gb to 3gb. Im thinking its not worth it..
The extra GB would be nice, but it would slow down what you currently have, and may have compatibility issues.

My previous machine had a 4800+. I averaged 15fps in Shift, regardless of graphics settings. OC'ing to 2.8GHz gave me an average of 18fps.
On my (current) i5-750, I average 70fps.
I doubt your 5200+ will perform much better.
Theoretically, low end Athlons should be fine, considering low end Core2's play it fine, but it seems that they don't.
That's why I jumped straight o insufficient CPU.

Nothing wrong with comprehensively narrowing the problem down though.

If you want to stretch your pc a bit longer, you could get a Phenom 9100e, the only phenom that will work in that motherboard.
I would recommend saving your money and getting a new pc later, if you can live without shift and dirt 2.

The 5770 was a little cheaper than a GTX260, and only had a little worse performance. It also runs cooler and quieter than a 260, and has DirectX 11. I doubt you'll need a high end graphics card for Starcraft 2. You could get a GTX260 if you need cuda or physx.

With the extra money, you can get:
an SSD, $200
another 4GB RAM, $140
a better PSU, $160.

With those parts, you now have a good build (but still no windows).

Better PSU's should be between 500W and 750W.
Good brands are:
-Thermaltake, Toughpower QFan or Evo Blue series.
-Antec, TruePower series.
-Corsair, TX or HX series.
There may be some other ones. These all have good reviews.

For the Gigabyte board, the RAM you get should be on this list. (direct link to pdf).
If you're lazy, you'll need 4x 2GB sticks of DDR3-1333 of either of the following part numbers:
-G-Skill F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK
-Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G

You could get faster RAM, but it can be hard to get working.

For the Asus board, linky.
For some reason, I can't download this file, but you're looking for 2GB or 4GB sticks of DDR3-1333, of G-skill, Kingston or Corsair.

Stock cooling will be fine.

What rogue316 posted, or swap out the SSD and put in a HD5850.

Other minor changes for slightly different builds:
different case,
better PSU (like a QFan),
an Asus motherboard,
keep the GTX260, put in more RAM
keep the GTX260, get an i7-860

You could easily fit an AMD build into this price, but I consider the i5 superior to a Phenom II 965 in most areas. They're roughly equal in gaming, so for a gaming build you could go for an AMD system, save yourself $200-$300 and get windows, a monitor or a decent sound system.

4GB DDR3-133

2x 80GB HDDs

1x 100GB HDD
Thermaltake Toughpower QFan 650W
CoolerMaster Storm Scout
Acer V193 monitor
Viewsonic VX2233wm monitor
Asus DVD drive

I'm stuck with a 10.5" graphics card length. Unfortunately, my motherboard doesn't do SLI, so I can't get a second 275. Might get a HD5850 later, if I can sell my 275.

Next upgrade will be an SSD.

Biggest problem is the generic RAM in combination with the i5. My PC doesn't like being turned on if it's been off for less than ~2 hours, so I might swap that RAM out for some off the QVL if I can be bothered. (it's not an overly annoying problem).

I said 'could', not would, for this reason. Stock CPU cooling and default case fans have been fine for me, but if I have $3K to spend, I would consider better cooling for the better hardware.
I believe that case design and fans depend on the purpose of a PC. A server needs good cooling, but it doesn't necessarily have to be silent. A HTPC does need to be near silent, so different cooling is needed. A Gaming machine is somewhere between the two.
I was also thinking that for $3K a machine could be spec'ed with watercooling.
I've found that cheap cases, either generic or OEM, tend to have poor cooling, even with superior fans.

2 builds come to mind.
1) The build I did for 3k, but add watercooling.

2) This:
CPU: i7-960 - $689
GPU: Asus HD 5970 - $1010.90
Mobo: P6T - $249
RAM: 12GB Corsair DDR3-1600 - $574
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower QFan 850W - $245
Case: Thermaltake Element V or similar Full-Tower - $179
HDD1: G.Skill Falcon 2 128GB SSD - $399
HDD2: Seagate 2TB - $185
Optical: Some random one - $40
TOTAL - $3570.90

Prices from MSY and CentreCom.

The 5970 could be swapped out for 2 5870s or 2 GTX480s and stick close to budget, but I consider the 5970 more practical than 2 graphics cards. All above options perform similarly, but a single card will be cooler and quieter than multiple.

I considered putting a higher-end board in, but the only advantage would be a slightly superior build quality; I doubt any of the extra features would be used.

12GB of RAM is overkill, but, hey, we had the money. This could be dropped back to 6GB if a higher-end mobo was to be included.

The Power Plus series is better than the other.

However, they are budget PSU's. According to some reviews I've read, both are quite noisy, not as efficient as the Corsair ones and not as well built.
It also may be a bit low on connectors.

They're not bad PSU's - better than generic! - but they definitely are aimed for a cheaper build than yours.

I recommend the Corsair HX-520 or a Thermaltake Toughpower Q-Fan 500W. They're better PSU's, and will be more useful for upgrading.

5)good case, but too noisy for me, and I don't like the looks.
6)is this a truepower psu? I can't find it.... if it's designed for the 1200, it's probably a good one, though
7)not so strong on ssd's, but that one looks to be all right. make sure you get the latest firmware. yes it has TRIM :)
8)good...you remembered to get the x64 version
9)for gaming, 22" will quickly become too small. it's a good compromise if you also do a bunch of non-gaming stuff, but you may want a 24" or 27" soon. I find 30" too large, but dual-screens are great too!

There are a bunch of cpu coolers for small cases. Generally, they're aimed for HTPC, so are all quite quiet and provide better cooling than stock.

Not sure what your second question means, but a dedicated graphics card would add to the noise, as it will have a fan on it UNLESS you get a silent one that has a big heat sink (passively cooled as opposed to actively).

Getting a dedicated graphics card will only reduce cpu load in software that can use gpu's. Generally this will happen with GPGPU software, but also can in in games with an nVidia card, whic hwill handle PhysX processing.
Getting a dedicated card won't drop noise noticeably.
The fan's speed should vary automatically depending on temperature - AMD calls this Cool'n'Quiet. This is enabled by default.

From a few reviews I read, all of the ones I suggested, and I expect all, cool better than stock coolers so you should be fine.
You should check some more reviews to confirm this.

You could also consider an i5 system eg:
i5-750, $230
G-B P55-UD3R, $150

The i5 should be better for gaming (it can auto OC itself), and the larger cache might improve multimedia (multimedia's not really my area).

You can't use the i7-860 in the EX58 motherboard. The i7-860 uses the 1156 socket, the EX58 has the 1366 socket.
If you want to use the i7-860, you should go for something from the Gigabyte P55 range or the Asus P7P55D range.
If you want to use the EX58 motherboard you will need either the i7-920, i7-950 or i7-965 (the last is very expensive).

I recommend the following:
-i7-860, similar performance to the i7-920 but $40 cheaper.

-Asus P7P55D. This or Gigabyte P55-UD4. I prefer Asus, but both have good performance, features and price.

-Very hard to get in Australia, but if you can, a HD5850. Failing that, either a GTX275, GTX285 or GTX295.

-At least 4 GB of DDR3-1333. You could get faster, but there has been some compatibility issues. Brand's not so important with RAM, but it's better if you can get brand name.

-For gaming/multimedia at least 1 TB HDD. You will fill it up easily. Seagate or Western Digital. I prefer Seagate. Exact version isn't very important (early 1 TB's had some issues, but now they're fine).

-A DVD drive, perhaps a Blu-Ray. Not sure about brands.

-A case. Personal choice. Needs to be big enough to house all the parts, and keep them cool. You might also want it to look good.

-A brand name PSU, at least 500W. Corsair, CoolerMaster, Thermaltake or similar. Modular PSU's are good.

-A big monitor. Personal choice on exact one, but probably a 22" or 24".

This roughly adds up to $1500 - $1600, plus K/B, mouse, speakers and other peripherals.

The 240GT will be harder to get though.
Either would be fine for the mentioned games, even at high res.
If you decide on the 240GT, get the GDDR5 version, not the GDDR3.
The only thing to consider is that Ati will be releasing low end 5xxx series cards soon, which may prove better; these will probably be very difficult to get though.

HP tend to by a budget mobo design from someone like Asus, strip it back and use it in their machines.
I would recommend getting an Asus or Gigabyte mobo though.

That sounds fine.
1) I don't like the looks :) , but it's perfectly functional.

2)I'd go with an Asus or Gigabyte motherboard, but there's nothing wrong with an MSI.
Avoid the GD41 and GD45, they're budget, so may have a lower built quality; and the Big Bang Trinergy - probably has too many unnecessary features. Any of the others would do.

3)This card's fine for a while, until you want to play Crysis 1920x1080 on very high

Rest is fine.

Under 32 bit, you'll lose 512 mb.
For most gaming, you won't be pushing RAM limits, so x64 might be a waste IMO, especially if there's a piece of software that you'll use that won't work. If all your software will work, go for just in case, but I doubt you'll miss 512 mb

Replying to ComputerBoyNeedsHelp:
As you have a decent amount of money, I suggest the Intel route.

$2K is about the bare minimum for an i7 machine. $2K would also get you a pretty awesome Core2Duo or Core2Quad machine.

If you can wait till september i5 comes out, you could get an i5 based machine...

-If you go the Core2Duo or Core2Quad route, i recommend a P45 chipset based motherboard.
This means either an Asus P5Q series or Gigabyte EP45 series. Have a look at their websites, see what specs you need from a motherboard.
Check out some reviews too - there have been some dodgy motherboards.

-Being for gaming, a fast dual core is better than a slower quad. An e8000 series CPU would be good.

-4 Gb of RAM

-Throw as much cash as you can at the graphics card. Either an ATi HD 4800 series or a nVidia GTX series.

-As much HDD space as you can afford. I recommend a big drive for games, movies etc, say 1 Tb, and a smaller drive for Windows...or 2 smaller drives in RAID for Windows. That way if windows dies most of your data is safe. And have a backup.

Thats the essentials, somewhere around $1000 - $1200. The rest can go to case, PSU, monitor. Any leftover could go to more or better than what I've suggested.

PS: you can start a new thread by clicking on an area. there is a button marked 'new topic' at the top right hand corner, rather than 'hijacking' another. ;-)

Neither ATI or nVidia are clearly better.
At your price point, there's only really the 9600GT and the HD4670.

The next up would be a 9800GT (now marketed as GTS250, but priced higher), at ~$170.
Probably too expensive, but a good card.

The next step down would be a 9500GT or a HD4650, at ~$80. These don't offer good gaming performance.

The 9600GT and the HD4670 have very close performances, the 9600GT being marginally better. I have seen both in action and can't tell the difference. The HD4670 is cheaper.
Other things to consider:
-Brand: as with most things computer, don't get cheap. I like Asus best, then gigabyte, and then XFX, msi and powercolour in no particular order.
-Package: The HD4670 is marketed as a budget card, so generally has a minimal package - drivers, short manual, s-video to RCA that's it. The 9600GT is marketed a bit higher, so comes with a bit more.
-Future performance: neither are going to be much use if sometime (soon) in the future you get a 30" monster monitor - they won't be able to run games at decent quality at that resolution. You need to consider if they are going to be good enough for long enough, or else save your money.
-The HD4670 doesn't require any extra power. It often runs cooler than the 9600GT, but has a dual-width cooler. It is also newer technology.

Find out if you can get any better cards for your budget, and check reviews. Google, say, HD4670 vs 9600GT. There's a lot of information out there.

I don't have much experience with 64bit, but i'd expect releases from the past couple of years onwards to be compatible, as 64bit becomes more popular

CPU: i7 920, with a good cooler
Graphics: GTX 260 or higher, or HD 4870 or higher
RAM: at least 6 Gb
Mobo: Something in the Asus P6T series
Case: Antec 900 2, Thermaltake M9, CoolerMaster Storm. At least mid tower, with good cooling.
PSU: High quality, brand name - nothing generic, eg: Antec, Corsair, Thermaltake. At least 500W.
Monitor: 22" or 24" widescreen. Have a look around, use one for a while if you can to see if you like it.

Not sure of the technical differences between NQ and PI, but the PI seems to be better, in some way.

You could drop the price a bit by getting slower RAM - 1333 rather than 1600.

A more basic case would drop the price too, but as this is for gaming, I expect that you'd want it to be a bit showy.

It would be a bit of hassle later on, but you could leave the smaller drive for now, and get that later on, then transfer windows to that.

You could also drop back to a P6T SE, which is a little bit lighter than the P6T. Check the asus website for details.

There's not much more that could be taken off, without compromising quality

As far as i know, most modern games are limited more by graphics and cpu than memory speeds. Some older games will see a significant improvement with faster RAM, but you'd probably be hitting 100+ fps with a GTX 260 on those anyway.
Have a look at these reviews:

I prefer seagate - I know of less failures than WD. In either case, most HDD's that fail are either very old, or have been mistreated - ei: dropped, hit, left running for several days straight, been in PC's that have been continually turned off incorrectly.
Also, if when benchmarked, and comparing things like error rates, spin up times, seagates tend to be better by a bit. Not noticeably though.

I am getting a problem where everything freezes, my screen turns black, and i must manually reboot.

This has been occuring on and off for about 2-3 months, but today has been occurring about every 15 minutes.

This may occur at various unconnected events and times.
ie: has occurred when gaming, listening to music, ripping a cd or dvd, opening a folder.

It is not a fault with the screen; with sound in the background when this occurs, the sound loops.

It is not a PSU issue. I have used a second, more powerful PSU and had the same problem.

It is not a windows issue; it has occurred under XP SP3, Vista x64, Windows 7 beta.

I don't think it's a heating issue; i have monitored the temps and they are stable when this occurs, and afterwards.

I've run memtest86 for about 16 hours and nothing showed up.

I'm going to run my pc in the bios for a while and see what happens

Specs:
GA-MA78GM-S2H (version 1.0)
Athlon x2 4800+
2GB ddr2-800
3 sata hdds, 1 ide hdd
ide optical drive

It may be that the graphics is the problem - or maybe the NB. My motherboard only has a very small heatsink on it, and looking over the temps again, this is hitting 70-80 degrees at startup.

Also, if it is the NB that might explain why the freezes occur at both CPU intensive/non-intensive and graphics intensive/non-intensive.

I was planning on buying a HD 4850 in the near future anyway.

It's running fine out of the case, spread on a small table, as it has been most of the day, so maybe it is with temps, although all the other temps are fine

I agree with the choice of ram and motherboard.

You might want to consider a Core 2 E7000 series CPU, depending on how intensive gaming you do.

Also, the HD 4600 series, depending on how intensive gaming you do, or for a bit more a 9600 gt.

Note that a Core 2 and a 9600 gt will be pushing your $700 limit, and you may need to have a look at the power requirements.

If you only plan on light games, stick with your plan it sounds fine, and will be easy to upgrade later if need be.

Have a look at

for very good prices but may not be in your area. I don't think freight is included.

That's what I'm reading. Doing a repair install of XP should fix XP, but I would just format the whole drive and reinstall XP. My tool of choice for that would be UBCD4Win.
As it's a laptop, the recovery partition may be of some use with the recovery CD's, but I expect not, as the MBR seems broken.

There may also be some commands in the XP recovery console. This can be accessed from UBCD4Win or an XP install disc. I haven't done that for years, so I can't be more specific.
Anyway, there is no way a website can possibly scan your computer, Java, JavaScript, C++ or any other language cannot scan your computer through a website, BUT IT CAN INFECT YOUR COMPUTER!
Mostly right...websites can't scan, but scans can be done over the internet, using software. eg Panda AV.

I believe that most websites offering scans are either malware delivery systems or scams.

Another useful piece of software is ThreatFire. This is a heuristics program - it scans for behaviour typical of malware and informs you of any potentials; eg, software connecting to the internet, injecting code into another program, copying itself etc.

AFAICT, you'll have to reset it to factory defaults, and then attempt a data recovery.
1) Connect the iPod Touch
2) Press and hold sleep+home until the device reboots.
3) Keep holding until that "please connect me to iTunes"-screen appears
4) iTunes says something about having detected a touch in recovery mode. Allow it to do its thing.

If you get the -18 error, proceed:

5) Disconnect the iPod Touch
6) Close iTunes
7) Reconnect the iPod Touch
8) iTunes launches and shows message as in step 4, but this time, the recovery will work

**PS THE "HOME BUTTON" IS the that button on the bottom of the ipod touch screen which is pretty easy to find since there is no button on the ipod touch but that one and the sleep awake button is offcourse the one you use to turn it off or put it to sleep
(from another forum).

I use Easeus Data Recovery Wizard for my data recovery, which works very well.
There are also a bunch of other data recovery programs you could try, such as getdataback, Recuva, OnTrack data recovery, Power Data Recovery, Handy Recovery, Gillware and many more.
Some are free, some aren't.
