Seven reasons why you should buy an Apple TV

If you've been sitting on the fence wondering whether an Apple TV is for you, now is the time to take a closer look -- version 2.0 of the product is a huge improvement.

If you've been sitting on the fence wondering whether an Apple TV is for you, now is the time to take a closer look. With a complete software revision and the ability to operate sans computer, Apple TV isn't just for geeks anymore but mums and dads looking for a better way to buy and consume digital content.

Apple TV is the only media box you'll actually be proud to show people.Apple TV is the only media box you'll actually be proud to show people.

1. No Syncing required. Apple TV 2 requires nothing more than a power point, a network connection and a TV. That's right - even your parents can use an Apple TV to browse and buy music, download and watch podcasts, and rent movies. Because Apple TV doesn't need a computer to get content it's now a zero-hassle configuration product.

2. Movie Rentals - This is the killer feature for Apple TV. My wife, who isn't really interested in technology at all picked up the remote after I upgraded our Apple TV and said 'can I really rent all of these movies?' With the Apple TV rental catalogue scheduled to grow quickly, expect Apple TV to transform the market for movie rentals as it did with music.

3. Photo viewing is truly slick. If you've got a digital camera (and I'll assume you do) Apple TV makes your digital photos look great. A big-screen TV is a much better way to show off your photos to friends and family than dragging them all into th study where the computer is. Since AppleTV now has .Mac and Flickr integration, your friends can also come over with a bottle of wine and share their photos with you as long (as they can remember their username -- get on to the login before you get on to the second bottle.)

4. Podcasts - Apple TV 2 now lets you download podcasts direct to the box. You can search through any of the podcasts listed in iTunes, or select from a list of providers, like the ABC, Sky News or BBC (If you change the iTunes store location setting in the General settings tab you'll be presented with a list of providers from other countries). You can also add any podcast to your favourites list for easy access.

5. AirTunes - Apple TV 2 now functions as an AirTunes client in a similar fashion to the Airport Express. Enabling AirTunes lets you stream music from iTunes on your PC to the Apple TV which can be plugged in to a stereo. If you check the 'Allow iTunes control from remote speakers' box you'll even be able to use the Apple remote to play/pause and rewind/fast forward iTunes. Apple TV 2 also displays the artwork of the track that is being played.

6. The Interface - While there are other media boxes out there that do some of what Apple TV 2 does, there's no way you'd ever expect your mum to be able to use them. Apple completely redesigned the interface of Apple TV 2 and it rocks. See here for more detail.

7. Apple TV now supports 1080p video output - Even though videos you download from iTunes are 720p at best, Apple TV 2 now upscales and supports 1080i output.

Note: Only the US iTunes store actually supports video rentals - To get a US iTunes account you'll either need a US credit card or a US iTunes Gift Voucher.

Matthew K:

I would totally agree with Danny's assessment of the Apple TV, if only the Australian iTunes store had access to the same level of content as the US store.

Until such time, it's a waste of space for Australian customers. Something to avoid unless you are a total Apple fanboy.

Getting a US iTunes account isn't complicated.

But why should you have to resort to those measures....?

Why are we being treated like a 5th Leg down here in OZ? Does Apple not want our business.

(A Wintel user still waiting for a good reason to buy Apple...)

I completely agree with you Matthew.
The Australian store is poor of content, and there is nothing about the American one, where you can rent movies and buy tv shows either.

Does it do DivX yet? I'll use my 360 until it does.

Chris Au:

1. no tv tuner
2. no divx support
3. tied into itunes networking, eg no xp shares
4. cheaper to get a xbox 360. which plays divx
5. video rentals in aus not likely, your wife would of been pissed when it didnt work.
6. video rentals wont be out here ever. period. we are still waiting on movies
7. 2.0 still delivers a product that should not be released in australia untill we get movies and video rentals because it doesnt do divx, or play dvds, hell theres no decoder... its useless...

dan thats 7 reasons why you need to stop talking the red pill of apple and start talking the cold hard blue pill of reality . its a useless product

DivX is a very popular Mpeg based compressor. Not supporting it is *almost* like not supporting mp3 files. It makes the device more useless than it already is.

Another Apple fanboi, posting articles about products that have many flaws but they seem to never point them out.

i love No2.....Movie Rentals is a killer feature.

LMAO yeah it might be but if its not available here why even mention it ??

Apple TV = fail-TV

Fanboi:

The only thing it's missing is DivX/XviD support. Make it HD DivX and you'll see the biggest mass-migration from PC to Apple the world has ever witnessed.

PC users are just p*ssed they can't watch their pirated TV shows and movies on this thing. If they could, they'd be flocking.

C'mon Apple, there's a missed opportunity waiting to be saved here!

Chris Au:

i disagree still to expensive even if it supported divx.... it absolutely doesnt do 1080p video playback.. it only can get 1080i or 720p... now at 449 for 40g is next to useless. hd content uses alot of space. so you gotta get the next one which is $579 even more useless

now heres the real reasons why i will never ever by a mac... i love macosX love it but

apple tv 40g US Store price $229($250)
apple au tv 40g Au Store Price $449

Thats a difference of 220.. it dont Friggen cost that much to ship with insurance

now the more expensive on is

$US329 thats $AU357

now what do apple charge on au store yeap you guessed it. $AU579

now hows that for a rant

apple equal rip off

Chris Au:

no its missing windows networking support.. so you cant just share a folder you have to use itunes.. its bullshit to state that its inderpendent of itunes when fundementally it still requires itunes in so many ways... sure i can buy but wouldnt it be good if i could share to it just like every other extender out on the market can do..

now funny quote of the day

No it has OS X. What the he'll is DivX?

And here's one reason not to, no digital tv tuner.

1080p? I would check and double check that statement.

I find it very hard to believe that little box can output true 1080p. It may output a 1080p signal but what is the actual resolution?

Wow it even shows pictures, wow my cheep DVD player does that. It lets you watch rented movies... again my DVD player does that. I can now watch podcast's ... something i have never done... and never will. Its a glorified DVD player with out the drive!!!! for the same price i can get a DVD player with a moderate sized hard drive and still have some cash left over to buy a movie or 2.. Next time Apple wants to try to reinvent the wheel they should take note that a square doesnt roll!!!

I see no one at APC is an any hurry to correct the misleading 1080p video statement so I'll give you a clue, just because it can connect to a 1080p display does not mean it can output 1080p video.

I know your a fanboy but that's no excuse for misleading people in a widely read publication, In fact I'm growing increasingly tired of the whole HD circus, seems not even many in the main stream tech journals are able to understand what is and isn't HD.

Me in Asutralia:

Agreed ...
I retail entertainment and speaking with the sales and marketing geeks from the suppliers is like speaking to the cashiers at Woolies. NONE of them can give a straight answer as to WHAT HD is and how it is translated from one device to another !!!
