Sony nearly doubles Vaio P performance

New CPU and SSD options nearly double the performance of the Vaio P, you still can't call it a netbook.

Back at CES 2009 in January, Sony announced its Vaio P computer. The reality of the introduction was that the machine was a new netbook with Vista and a massive price tag. Sony was very specific in not calling the Vaio P a netbook despite the fact that it walked and talked like a netbook.

Not so long ago Sony announced that it had ditched Windows Vista on its Vaio P and went with the more netbook friendly XP Home operating system. Sony has now announced that the Vaio P has received a couple new upgrades that greatly increase the performance of the machine compared to previous models.

The new Vaio P gets an Intel Atom Z550 CPU, new SSD options, and a WiMax option. I for one don’t get why they even bother with WiMax. Unless the feature adds nothing to the cost of the netbook it should be skipped considering that there are no WiMax networks in the vast majority of areas of Japan, where the feature is available. The overall performance with the new parts is almost twice the old model's performance. There is no word on pricing or availability at this time.

I suspect part of the reasoning could be the fact Sony Ericsson is a WiMAX Forum member.

Hiya "Tin" makes you wonder how many of these little "non-notebooks" managed to WiiMax themselves back home :):)
