Tell me sweet little lies: Apple touchscreen netbook

Samantha Rose Hunt11 March 2009, 1:45 PM

After announcements of Mac desktop improvements the Apple rumor mill is once again churning.

This time the 'mill is running with ideas that the company is working to develop a touch-screen netbook which would enter the market just in time for fall, and those back to school sales.

A Quarter 3 release of the netbook would give Apple a leg up on competitors, with Windows 7 loaded machines slated to be available at the holidays the company is going to have to release something.

Don’t hold your breath, I personally say.

On Monday DigiTimes reported that the Commercial Times, a Chinese language print publication which was the original source of the information stated "Taiwan-based Wintek will supply touch panels for Apple's new Netbook, and shipments will start in the third quarter this year."

Wintek supposedly revealed that its working closely with Apple on the development of some new products, however the company doesn’t know what the applications of the new products are. The company is also rumored to have said that no shipment schedule has been determined, but that they are likely to begin during the second half of the year.

This story was quickly expanded upon by the Dow Jones Newswire, which stated that an unnamed source claims "the mini laptop computers will likely have monitor screens that are between 9.7-inches and 10-inches," it has also been said that "other specifications and functions are still under evaluation.

It would seem the day has been full of individuals getting their two cents in regarding the device. Engadget posted a digital rendering of what an Apple Netbook could potentially look like. A reporter from the Silicon Alley Insider claimed that Apple will merely create a bigger version of the iPod Touch, which has been deemed the iPod Touch HD.

Individuals that believe the iPod Touch HD concept claim that the bigger screen will be for watching movies, playing video games, surfing the web at a better size, and reading e-books. This concept would open the doors to a new market, which would allow the company to simultaneously compete with companies like Amazon and Sony with their e-reading and gaming devices.

Usually new products are announced during the January MacWorld event, however this year the company was virtually absent, and the only big announcement was in regards to its iLife software.

As always, Apple declines to comment, as it is in the company policy not to have any discussions regarding “rumors and speculation.”

Why not just run OSX on the MSI Wind? If there's going to be a Mac Netbook, it'll most likely cost more than $1k anyway ...

If Apple had been smart, they'd have jumped in and created a netbook for the NSW DET netbook rollout. Even if they made zero profit off that, they'd:
a) have a netbook model available to sell retail
b) create a huge jump in userbase who would potentially want matching iMacs at home
c) get huge media coverage if they were the selected vendor.

Personally I wouldn't have liked that, but I'm just saying it would have been a big opportunity they missed.

Apple doesn't make small cheap laptops. They make things that are quite different, make them very well and then charge a fortune for them.

I have no doubt that their foray into this area will be with a tablet, the idea being to replace books and paper. It would probably be about the size of an A5 sheet of paper and aim to act as a notepad, like the data pads you see in Star Trek. I think this rumor keeps coming up again and again because the IT industry has been waiting for this to happen for years, and they know Apple are the right people to do the job properly.

Quoting McBanjo: Apple doesn't make small cheap laptops.

Only 1/2 right. Remember the MacBook Air? Neither do I. It was small, but it wasn't cheap. I have a feeling that the iPod Touch HD design won't come to frution, seeing that iPhone users were kind of anoyed by the touch screen keypad.

I think Isamu Sanada's idea looks the most realistic of Apple, it looks sexy and has the popular design with Smartphones that keyboard only comes out when you really need to use it. I'm just hoping that Apple can prevent the dismal battery life out of other netbooks by using its usual MacBook power consumption tweaks.

However, I just got a MacBook 13" Aluminium, and I'm pretty happy with my purchase.

I beleive Apple will do a large form factor touch based tablet. It extends the already popular iPhone/iPod Touch ecosystem and will bring in more development for the Appstore.

For I while now I've thought they should call it the iZac, get it?

Oh dear... The gears are turning slowly in my head today... Took me about 2 minutes wondering why you'd pick iZac as the name... And the sad thing is I'd just read Raindog's post mentioning the name!

What you may not know is that the Newton was not the brainchild of Steve Jobs. It was John Sculley who brought it to fruition when he was CEO of the company. First year of profit and Jobs axes it. Some say this was as revenge (it wasn't his baby), but it's more likely that it was a major distraction. At this stage in Apple's life, its product line was very bloated, with X8090 this and PowerX5329 that. Jobs stopped all this nonsense to make Apple what it is today: only the best products.
