Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or advanced user, you'll find something worthwhile in our Ultimate iPhone User Guide. In this instalment: getting new iPhone apps.

What's that, you've gotten yourself a shiny new iPhone? Never fear, our comprehensive guide to getting the most out of your iPhone will have you up and running in no time.

iPhone Apps

The iPhone comes with a selection of pre-loaded apps to get you started, and they’re pretty self-explanatory with regards to function. We’ll cover some of these in detail elsewhere in our guide. But the real fun comes in downloading more apps and games through the App Store. You can do this either through iTunes on your desktop computer (go to www.apple.com/au/itunes if you haven’t installed it on your computer yet), or through the App Store app on the iPhone. It’s easier to do through a desktop computer, as you’ve got more display space to browse through apps.

You’ll need to set up an Apple ID before you can download anything to your iPhone, and you would have seen an option to create this when you first set your iPhone up. If you skipped that step, you can create an Apple ID through your iPhone or desktop computer. From the desktop version of iTunes, click the ‘iTunes Store’ option in the left hand pane, then the ‘Sign In’ link in the top right hand corner below the ‘Search Store’ field. Select the ‘Create New Account’ option, and follow the prompts to create a new account. To set up an iTunes account from your iPhone, tap on the App Store icon, and from the Featured tab, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap the ‘Sign in’ button. Tap the ‘Create Apple ID’ option and follow the prompts to create a new account. For both options, you’ll need to have either a credit card handy or an iTunes voucher to create a new account. If you don’t have either, see below for a workaround.

The standard iTunes account steup process requires that you have either a credit card or an iTunes voucher. But you can set one up without entering either. To do this from the desktop version of iTunes, select iTunes Store in the iTunes sidebar, then select the App Store link at the top of the window. Scroll down to the Top Free Apps list on the right hand side, hover your mouse over any of the apps there, then click on the ‘Free’ button that appears. Enter your personal information, then on the next screen, select the ‘None’ option under ‘Please select a payment method’. Then enter your Billing Address information, and click the ‘Create Apple ID’ button at the bottom of the screen.
