News apps

Having other people curate your news consumption is so old-fashioned. Apps like Zite Personalised Magazine (free) and Flipboard (free) enable you to customise what you read based on the topics that interest you in a nifty magazine-style layout. If you do most of your news consumption through Google Reader, Feedly (free) offers the nicest interface for working through all of your unread items, and it also supports Tumblr, Instapaper, Read It Later, Facebook and Twitter. Of course, if you’d rather consume content the old-fashioned way, SMH ($1.99 a month) lets you customise the sections that are displayed in an iPhone-friendly format, while PressReader (99c per newspaper download) lets you download over 2,000 full content newspapers from around the world in their native broadsheet format.
