USB 3.0 cables now on sale, but hubs still a year away...

An online store is now selling USB 3.0 ‘SuperSpeed’ cables which bend the needle at up to 5Gbit/s – provided you can conjure up some USB 3.0 hardware.

If you feel the need for some serious USB speed, why bother waiting? Click over to USB Fever and for US$10 (and an extra US$3 for shipping) you can upgrade to SuperSpeed USB 3.0 cables, which claims to bend the needle at 5Gbit/s – ten times the 480Mbit/s peak of today’s USB 2.0 spec.

Mind you, it’ll take a while for the data throughput to climb up to that speed. About a year or so. That’s because we’re not expecting to see USB 3.0 hardware – hosts, hubs and the like – until early 2010.

But why should that bother you? Check out the specs: this fleet-footed cable is not only “PC and Mac compatible”, according to the boffins at USB Fever, but the colour is listed as an oh-so-trendy ‘solid black’ (we’re tempted to wonder is a glossy piano black cable is on the way).

So sure, right now it’s just a USB 2.0 cable which dares to dream of life in the fast lane, but at least you’ll be future proofed...

pfft! Seeing is believing. This is a lot like the 802.11n saga that I believe is still ongoing.
