Versatile security? Acer TravelMate TM5760 review

The Acer TravelMate TM5760-2314G50Mibk is a pleasant looking business notebook. Unfortunately the build quality is unexceptional though as the hinges and screen flex somewhat. The keyboard is comfortable enough but it flexes during typing and ultimately the keys feel a bit cheap. The multi-touch trackpad is serviceable and features a few gesture commands along with a grooved ridge on the right to make scrolling easier.

Business notebooks typically have hardware security and manageability features but instead the TM5760 uses Acer’s ProShield software. It tackles BIOS level security to make breaking into the notebook much harder password and data encryption to keep specific data safe and high grade data deletion along with remote data removal for the paranoid types. While versatile it would have been preferable to see security hardware like a Trusted Platform Module and manageability hardware like an Intel vPro processor. The TM5760 is Energy Star and EPEAT Silver rated so power usage will generally be low and there’s very little environmentally damaging material used in construction.

The 15.6in (1366×768 resolution) matte screen has good colour depth and a respectable viewing angle. Otherwise the TM5760 has decent specs including a Sandy Bridge Intel Core i3-2310M (2.1GHz) processor and 4GB of RAM that give a PCMark Vantage score of 4491. A 500GB (5400 rpm) hard disk drive is OK but we’d expect 7200 rpm. Battery life is impressive and while it’ll need a top up the TM5760 lasted 5 hours and 15 minutes. Apart from the obligatory Gigabit Ethernet VGA and USB 2.0 ports there’s a HDMI port a pair of audio jacks and a DVD burner. To finish off connectivity there’s Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Business notebooks are a unique breed and it’s the TM5760’s lack of uniqueness that lets it down. It feels like a basic notebook with strong security software on it rather than a hardcore business notebook fit for use in a demanding enterprise environment. Acer makes some genuinely great products but this isn’t one of them.

Available from Acer retailing for $1699.
