Vista RTM cracked by pirates before release

It hasn't been released toanyoneoutside Microsoft, and Vista RTM has already hit the pirate boards, along with an activation hack.

Well, so much for closing piracy loopholes! With Windows Vista and Office 2007 only just going Gold, and not even available to Microsoft beta testers, developers or volume licence subscribers, the first cracked versions have already hit the pirate boards.

The Windows version which has been released is called Vista BillGates. It doesn’t feature any activation cracks itself, and the supplied product key is just for the installation.

The activation crack is a separate download, and works by replacing the licensing components with components from beta builds. Then using a product key from Beta 1, Beta 2, RC1 or RC2, the Gold version of Vista can be activated online.

In this sense, it’s not a true crack – it’s simply leveraging off compatibilities between the betas and the Gold release. Vista still needs to be activated, and it looks like for the moment, there’s no way around that.

Also, my guess is that this particular loophole won’t be open for very long. Microsoft has a list of every product key it issued during the beta testing, so it’s not going to be difficult to blanket block them once the testing period officially ends.

However, it’s still staggering as to just how quickly this was released. Of course, a massive target like Windows Vista was always going to be instantly subjected to pirate attacks, but to be distributing copies so soon is impressive, to say the least.

On a more sour note for Microsoft, a full version of Office 2007 Enterprise was released on the boards a few hours after Vista BillGates. Unlike Vista, Office 2007 uses Volume Activation 1.0 (no activation required), so it’s unclear how Microsoft is going to be able to counter its dissemination in future.

So is it a case of Pirates 1, Microsoft 0? I don’t think so – not yet, anyway. You can tell a lot about the strength of a product by the nature of the methods used to circumvent its copy protection. Some apps simply need the right product key, others need a key plus a cracked executable.

With Vista, Microsoft have demonstrated (or at least appear to – it’s rather early to tell) that they are way beyond low-end piracy. Rather like NS5s in I, Robot, the product is now so strongly tied to its parent that breaking that relationship seems ever-more improbable, given the parent’s ability to keep tabs on each and every installation of Windows out there.

Perhaps Vista is subject to Asimov’s Three Laws. Oooo…freaky.

I am still try to comprehend the fact that Microsoft is selling Vista as a new and separate OS. I have installed the RC2 and I can't see anything that deserves more credit than the title of a service pack 3 for Windows XP.

Check out the new stuff coming out for Leopard on Mac OS X here, http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/index.html. Now tell me if that is worthy of making the new Mac OS XI. This is Apple's weak and unnecessary response to Vista's pathetic excuse for an operating system.

Next thing Microsoft's gonna be charging us something like $200 for it I bet.

Activation will be cracked soon, as i have seen and read there are a few select crackers that have cracked it but not for public release as yet, because if they put it out there MS will surely block it, it looks like it might be only for the l33t crackers ?

jim took back his comments about the no AV, wat a noob:

http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=194300088

Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's platforms and services division, has clarified his widely reported comment that Vista was so secure he had not bothered to install antivirus software on a home PC used by his 7-year-old son.

here was a site that reported the original comments:

http://www.betanews.com/article/Allchin_Suggests_Vista_Wont_Need_Antivirus/1163104965

told a reporter that the system's new lockdown features are so capable and thorough that he was comfortable with his own seven-year-old son using Vista without antivirus software installed.

Why complain about a product you don't use or won't pay for? and in that case, use Linux instead of Windows if you are too tight to pay for an OS.

I personally use XP and FreeBSD on my workstation.
I will be upgrading to Vista when I feel ready.

The cracking may continue, but the best thing MS ever did was block downloads from invalid copies of Windows. I know more than one person that bought XP because they were tied of being blocked from downloading updates, and free MS software. As much as I hate the activation, I think in the short run it will increase their profits.

I know plenty of people who switched to Linux instead. I also know of plenty of techies who was tired of cleaning out viruses etc for their parents and friends, so they installed Linux on their workstations.

I did say it would increase profits in the short term. The huge roadblock that they have created will eventually push users to something else. I am not convinced it will be Linux. Apple is another alternative. Only time will tell us the answer to that one.

I remember when Novell was really restrictive with their licenses, and MS was not - it caused the destruction of Novell.

In response to "free" software - you know exactly what I meant. Free stuff that the average user knows as "free". Like the anti-spyware product.

Many friends of mine have tried to move to Linux, but they can't play their games, or use things like their I-Pod. Linux needs to fix these problems to get the average Joe to switch.

If they couldn't connect their ipod to linux, they really must have not actually tried. I know there's ipod support in a few programs, and I expect there are probably a million guides on the subject online.

Games and proprietary software for business are the only reasons I ever take as legitimate reasons. And even then only if they actually apply to the user.

Games will continue to be a problem, even with WINE derivates allowing playing of a selection.

iPod's however work seemlessly with applications like Amarok. It works even better than iTunes in that music can be put on and off the iPod very easily.

You really have to wonder if you'll be able to activate your copy of Windows Vista in 2017. Will Microsoft still be "tracking every copy of windows" at this point with their Genunine stuff? Recently, I've had to obtain a copy of Windows 98 (believe it or not) to test some problem web application stuff from IE 4.0. Yeah I know it sounds crazy. But i'm sure you'd be suprised how many people out there still run windows 98 and do not run their updates (i'm not even sure you can get updates for that anymore)! Actually, as long as it took them to get this OS out.. Vista might still be their latest OS in 2017...and i'm sure people will still be running windows 98 somewhere.. it's crazy.. i don't think mac is the solution.. they are every bit as proprietary as microsoft

this kind of hack that uses the key of RC1 and RC2, is going to end by 07/31/07 will reach. because it uses the key of the RC1/RC2 which will end up on that date, it will also end up in that date.
but there are several hacks there that somewhat will "semi-permanently" hack the activation. In the Philippines (in my case -Angeles City), lot of Beta DVDs of Vista roaming around and until the first week of December, there were now pirated copies of VISTA RTM! the truth is I'm now using this and hack it by my own research.
The pirated DVD costs only $3 (150PhP). while the genuine (to be on jan 30) is 7000PhP. look at the difference.

The preferable method of using the Rush To Manufacture Vista Commercial Beta (aka. the Bill Gates version) is to simply install it using the OEM key. A process which is legally done by individuals who don't actually own the license (OEM's included) they are installing for. You get a Microsoft granted choice of which version you wish then. Legally allowing full rights during the grace period. It's then a simple process of installing a service which stops the countdown till another date. A process Microsoft itself is using with the Vista release. Microsoft won't like this. Maybe they can blacklist the OEM key. LOL. Or start killing randomly named services. LOL. No Windows code is changed so it's going to be darn difficult to repair.

Dude, Good Artidle but there is an easy way around all this Activation bs All you have to do is download Vista_Time_Creack.exe It works as to Reset the Time You have to trial with the Windows Vista, Or Method two, Install Windows Vista Crack or whatever you wish to do, And Programs>Accecories>Run>Cmd or just go to commmand prompt, And type in 'slmgr -rearm' But make sure that you only do that when you are coming down to your last few days of trial Becuz you can only use the "rearm" trick Three times.. If you run out there is another crack on the Internet called well i dont know but just go to google and >search> slmgr commands, go to the first site. and of course whilst doing all this, HAVE FUN!! (please send e-mails to djb@happyhardcore.dj for more info or if you like this crack)
