Vodafone cuts price of 3G netbook deal

Vodafone’s mobile broadband bundle of a 3G-equipped Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook and 5GB of data drops $10 to $59.95 per month.

After an initial stuffup at the launch of Australia’s first 3G netbook bundle, Vodafone has sweetened the offer to make it better value, with Vodafone reducing the monthly cost from $69.95 to $59.95. That’s good news on its own, but better is that the deal will automatically extend to current customers.

Vodafone Australia PR Manager Michelle O’Brien confirmed the one-in all-in discount to APC this afternoon, and stressed that there would be no need for customers to re-sign or extend their existing 24 month contract.

Customers will see the reduction during their February billing cycle, although O’Brien said this will first appear as a $10 forward credit on the account rather than a straight-out $59.95 rate.

The new price tuns in parallel with the carrier’s existing Vodafone’s ‘three-month free access’ offer, where customers will be credited for the fifth, sixth and seven months of their 24-month contract. That deal in itself has also been extended to March 31st.

O’Brien also advised APC that all customers who were accidentally supplied with a Mini 9 sporting an 8GB solid state drive rather than the advertised 16GB SSD should by now have received their replacement netbook along with a bonus 16GB SDHC memory card.

I'd warn potential customers to be very wary of Vodafone. First, their coverage is very limited. More so, Vodafone are doing next to nothing increase their coverage despite their promises to customers to do so last year. If you expect to travel around and use your connection, then expect to be disappointed! Second, their customer service, especially through their on-line site, can be rather poor!

Just be aware that the 3G module used is, according to vodafone, NOT compatible with the 900MHz overlay being implemented for extended coverage in rural areas.

That's absolutely correct, and something we flagged in an earlier story on this. The 3G Mini 9 is suited only to the cap city and regional areas covered by Vodafone's existing 2.1GHz 3G network.
